When can I drink from a straw

Recommended Posts

Truthfully many people were given straws in the hospital. It seems to be an old wives tale told over and over again. Some people have problems with drawing in excess air with a straw while others get their fluids in much better with a straw. I'm not a doctor but I would give it a shot when I felt comfortable.

Not thinking about it, I drank Water from a straw the other day (finishing the entire glass of water) when we were out and about. I had no ill effect whatsoever.

Mine was 10/25 and I prefer to drink from a straw. I actually feel like I take in LESS air and can get more Water in that way.

My Dr says absolutely not, and I'm not one to break rules. Lol I would ask your surgeon.

My Dr said it was a myth and that the main reason they don't recommend is because it is harder to take small sips. I have been using a straw since week 3, taking little sips and I actually feel like I am getting less air and less hiccups.

I had my surgery 5 weeks ago today. I was told to wait 4 weeks before using a straw. I tried one (just a tiny sip) a little before that and it was horrible, lots of gurgling and I could feel the air in my stomach. I am not in any hurry to try one again. But everyone is different.

As usual, check with your doctor, but in general if it doesn't cause you any discomfort then it isn't hurting anything, and if you don't feel right when doing it, don't do it again for a while.

"Doctor, it hurts when I do this..."

"Well, then don't do that!"

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
