How does the predicted loss percentage get worked out?

Recommended Posts

Hi all, question i have is on my initial consultation with my surgeon he said that the sleeve would help me lose around a certain percentage of my excess weight, now my question is once that percentage is reached and you continue to follow your plan does the surgery suddenly stop working, surely you should continue to lose weight after this point.

I pressed for some real answers on this one when I started out. The one I got that made the most sense is that the numbers they quote are averages. On one end of the scale you have the fanatical gym rats. On the other, you have the people going back to eating the way they used to, the week after surgery. The rest of us are somewhere in between. Your own personal weight loss will depend on changed habits, body chemistry, and determination.

I get what your saying there but if you truly commit to the lifestyle change (like i have) and stick to the food plan and also visit the gym 5 times a week is there any reason the weight loss wont continue indefinitely

At my initial my doctor said I should lose about 50 to 60% of my excess weight. I have lost about 50% now at the 7 month mark and are losing more just at a much slower rate.

Well I suppose you could, but there are consequences. Seriously, at some point you are going to hit a plateau. The extreme would be anorexia.

What Little Bill said.... The numbers you were quoted are just averages. There are extremes on both ends. However, at 63 years old I am certainly not a gym rat ;) I lost over 100% of my excess weight, maintain at a healthy BMI, but do it through healthy food choices and appropriate portions, not excessive excercise .

As for losing indefinitely, that is usually the result of trading one eating disorder for another. At some point the calories you burn wil equal the calories you consume and your weight will stabilize. That usually happens on its own, but rarely do some people have to make a conscious effort to increase their calories once they hit maintenance. You will find the opposite to be much more common, though....people tend to struggle as they get closer to goal and some regain is more likely than continued loss.

WLS statistics are basically a reflection of what thousands of OTHER people did with their opportunity. They have nothing to do with your ultimate outcome....only YOU determine that number.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
