Need support, regret and scared

Recommended Posts

Hello! I am 1 week and 1 day post op. My first 3 days in hospital were rough but felt better everyday after that. Now I am having horrible heartburn and pulling pain from my largest incision. I am so scared I made the wrong choice, I have a full time job and 2 little kids. I feel so scared my life will never be the same. I'm trying to listen to positive meditative healing mp3s, anyone else have similar after surgery? Please any help is appreciated

Everything will be fine. It was about a week after surgery when I started FEELING my incisions. The dull aches and pains go away after a few days. If you still have pain meds from your doc, take advantage of them. As for the heartburn if you're not on a PPI (Zantac, Prilosec, Nexium, etc) get on one! If you're on one, it might not be the right formula for you-- Prilosec does nothing for me, Zantac doesn't last long enough. The only pill that gives me relief is Nexium. If none of the OTC remedies work, see your doctor because he will need to prescribe something to you.

Hang in there, it gets better!

It will get better. There are definitely phases that you will go through. Regarding anxiety about having had the surgery, the first month I thought, "OMG what have a I done, why did I have to have 80% of my stomach cut out to help me conquer obesity?" My mouth was so dry and I couldn't get in enough fluids, The incisions hurt and the last thing I wanted to do was walk around like doctor ordered. I did my best to do what I was supposed to. Some days I didn't and some days I come close (notice how the first month I didn't reach the given goals but I sure tried really hard!!)

About the regret, I felt it too. At some point I said to myself - It's done and it cannot be undone... so let me try to make the best out of it. I looked at alot of before and after pics. I browsed this site for decent shake recipes and other eating tips. (I'm not much of a cook). The scale helped motivate me and give me hope when I lost pounds but I only did it weekly the first few months. I think the light at the end of the tunnel helps to motivate. Also once you start dropping entire dresses sizes - and YOU WILL!! :) It really helps make all the struggles worth it. then you will get your energy back after a few months. (everyone is different so maybe it'll be sooner for you!) I have more energy now than when I was in my teens!!

I'm not going to lie, I was exhausted the first 4-6 months. Loosing so much weight so rapidly takes it out of you. Just take it easy, walk, rest, get your fluids. I lost hair month 4-6; like HALF of it - FREAKED ME OUT!! But I started taking Biotin and using Nioxin for a month or so and it helped it start to grow back. It stopped falling out at 6 months post surgery. Its growing back now. I have 2 inches of fly away outgrowth all over LOL. It's sort of funny actually but I make it work.

Talk to others about your feelings. The group I went to the pre-surgery classes created a private FB forum and we would vent and post our feelings, successes etc. I would also connect with other folks that had bariatric surgery, 1 via this forum. We met for coffee and its nice to hear her perspective. I tried to really focus and listen to her journey. I find when I am down on my situation that listening to others plights helps me to step outside of myself and I feel like I'm helping them by listening and encouraging them. That makes me feel good. (By the way if anyone makes you feel judged/down - IGNORE them and focus on the positive and look to others to help support you.)

I am 10 months post op and 110 lbs down. :D I am eating more variety of food and I don't regret for a single moment having had the surgery. I only wish I had been able to afford to do it sooner. You hang in there girl! We are hear for you!

Hi,

I am right there with you, I had my surgery the same day as you, and I'll tell I really felt prepared but you can never prepare on what the outcome might be!! I been having a bit of regretfulness. But like my uncle said there no turning back what done is done, and I have to make the best of it. I had the RNY knowing it's complications prior and after there's nothing like living it and being real. Let's hang in there we got this, let's be positive and make some great remarkable memories!!!!

Definitely take your PPI. I needed Zantac for the first three months before my stomach stopped pumping out so much dang acid.

Also, yes, I could feel the incision pulling. It hurt quite a bit for a few weeks. Actually it's kind of funny because I'm laying here in a recliner covered in incisions from hip to hip, all the way up the center of my stomach and all around my breasts because I had all my loose skin removed and ALL of the incisions have been pulling this week since I went off of pain medication. It will heal. Follow your doctor's orders. Stay positive!

I just had the same problem and famotadine worked alright for me. I got surgery on 11/16/16 and felt regret a few days ago but today I'm feeling better. Hang in there.

I'm young, healthy, never used anesthetic during dental work because I had high pain tolerance.

The sleeve is by far the most excruciating pain I've ever known. I could barely move for two weeks. I had to call 911 twice when I couldn't get up off the floor because even the slightest bend in my torso was agony. Slept upright and on my back for two months. Incisions hurt for two months. It was torture.

It just happens. You never know how your body will respond. You will get through this, you will survive, and the pain will be a distant memory and not matter anymore. Now that I'm closer to my goal and living the life I dreamed of, I'd do it a thousand times over.

All you can do is hang on and remember that this too shall pass. The pain is not permanent. It will eventually end. And you're suffering through this for yourself, for your children, for a better life.

Hang in there, friend. It sucks right now, but it gets so, so much better.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
