You know what, im not a dr, so i cant say whether they will or not, but i can say that ive had a gas pain that i thought was a heart attack, and ill take no pain verses using a straw anyday. Im not a fan of straws because i dont get anything from fast food places. And if i am out to dinner im use to having a glass of wine so no straw there either. You have to go with your own mind. If you think you'll be okay with using a straw then ok, but please, please, please, dont do it because youve read it that 30 people use straws everyday and then youre the 31st and you get excess gas and past the hell out from a gas pain like me and say but they told me it was ok.....lol. i, personally dont see how it could hurt since your lips are around a straw verses drinking out a glass where you can be like my boys and just open your mouth to drink and half your mouth is open....rotf. GOOD LUCK

It depends on what kind of slush (like a slurpee from 711?) and how you handle sugar.

I really badly wanted a slurpee but no one in my area had any sugar free slurpees. I made one myself with crystal light and ice in my ninja. Not perfect but close enough.

I use straws too. My surgeon said it was ok, it was up to me and my reaction. I havent had any negitive experiences.

HW 385 SW 359 CW 331 (54lbs down!) Sleeved 10/5/16

My dr is definitely against them but i have had a regular slurpee. Im not a cookie, cake, candy person but my craving is a cherry slurpee from 711, and 1x a month, i treat myself. Thats just me.

Lol. Please please please don't do it because 30 people didn't have an issue...

How about this turn instead-

" there is NO evidence that straw usage will do anything other than allow you to drink liquid..."

We could go round and round... To each, their own I say!

Wow!!! You're LUCKY! You can't use a straw but you CAN ingest a Slurpee? Do you get the ones that are sugar free? And do you eat it with a straw? Those things are soooo pumped full of air. That would certainly cause an issue for me!!!

I find I drink a lot more Water when I use a straw because I have sensitive teeth and the straw helps get the cold Water past them. I'm also 2+ years out. I drink a hot cup of coffee then when I get to work I fill my 32 oz cup with ice water and try to finish it before lunch and fill it again when I get back. My personal experience.

Day 2! Every time I sipped I would take in too much air and burp a LOT. I tried a straw out of curiosity and had a much easier time. I drank everything from a straw pre-op. I did confess to my dr at my 1 week checkup and I was told as long as I'm not experiencing any issues it was ok.

Straws is a forever no thing..it fills the limited space and gosh.

I was given a straw in the hospital and the Water bottle my surgeon gave me utilized a straw.

Keep in mind that YOUR plan doesn't y to EVERYONE. :)[/quoquo yes. Lipstick I'm quite aware of that.. which is why I latter added about others I know that use them but also, it wasn't just something told to me Individually, it's in many weight loss surgery books and the clinic tells everyone that so I was just passing along my information and unpleasant straw experience

This thread is very enlightening bc I thought I was doomed with straws lol

Then when I had my negative experience with one by accident, that just cinched it!

I like straws bc before WLS, they were my primary tool for drinkibg so much Water daily and since WLS, Water has been sooo hard to get in, having to pick up my buba barrel and sip sip sip ....I much rather suck lol ha..

Hopefully after I heal more, I will be able to use a straw again

I was given a straw in my Water cup in the hospital room right after surgery.

I only use a straw on rare occassions when I buy a fountain sugar free drink, not for any other reasons but I don't use straws otherwise.

To each there own. If someone is afraid they will draw too much air, then they shouldn't use them.

They do come in handy if you decide to puree a pork chop or taco only 3 days after surgery. :)

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
