When did other people start to get hungry again?

Recommended Posts

I am just shy of eight weeks post-op, and I find myself hungry much of the time. I'm compensating by eating more frequently while staying between 700 and 800 calories a day. But I thought the a big benefit or VSG is that with the removal of the ghrelin-producing part of the stomach, you wouldn't be hungry for a few months. I find myself having to resist the temptation to snack - and last week failing at it - more than in the pre-op stage.

Does anyone have any thoughts on the subject?

I woke up from surgery hungry. The 4th post op day was the worse it's better every day but yea, I'm hungry.

Are you eating solid (mushy) food? My surgeon said to expect feeling hungry until there is food staying in my (tiny) stomach. I try to keep busy, it helps.

I am just behind you (today is Day 39 post-op). I eat about every 90 minutes or so (2 oz or so each time), or about 8 times in the day. So I'm never really hungry. I am getting between 800-900 calories per day, less than 20 carbs, and around 90 grams of Protein.

How much Protein are you getting in your 700-800 calories? How much are you eating at a time?

Almost 16 months, never physically hungry unless I go 12-16 hours without eating.

Are you taking a PPI? If not that could be why you feel hungry.

13 months post op.

The ONLY time I get "hungry" is when I eat sugary carbs....or bread type stuff....crackers.....etc. I'll get "hungry" 30 mins later and want to have more.

As long as I eat meats, fowl, greens, vegetables and etc then I'm never hungry.

I've even returned to having occasional fresh fruit (apples, grapes and other) and not had those cravings.

I get 60 to 80 grams of Protein a day, as per the dietitian's instructions. Meals are either a Protein shake or bar (breakfast, and lunch and dinner are 1.5 ounces (weight, not volume) of chicken and some carbs (half a tortilla). Sometimes I add a little cheese or cheese sauce (about half a tablespoon) or sour cream (about half a tablespoon). I have a Protein Bar as a snack either during the day or in the evening. Sometimes as a snack I'll have a piece of toast or a pudding cup (sugar free).

I am on a PPI.

@@ryan_86, I'd nix the Protein bars. Most that I have seen have high carbs/sugar and would, at least for me, trigger a carb attack.

The few times I've "slipped up" and had a few carbs, it started a vicious circle of hunger and cravings. I feel like a carnivorous animal over here, but it works! No cravings for anything.

I'm 6 months post VSG and had also hoped that my hunger would go but it hasn't ever really. Initially I found myself hungry all the time and that feeling not always going when I had eaten and felt full. However I am aware that some of it is definitely 'head hunger' but some definitely isn't. Overall, I'm not sure that my hunger is much different to pre-op however whilst hunger is sometimes difficult for me to handle, it mostly wasn't a big driver of my eating. I know that the statistics suggest that it comes back for a lot of people anyway in the longer term so I've learnt to live with it.

However despite all of that, my eating is totally different and my thoughts have changed so don't worry too much. With or without hunger, you can learn to make it work.

Good luck

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
