Day 6 Post Op: Having Difficulty

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I had my surgery on Nov 1st. I was only suppose to stay overnight in the hospital for 1 night but that turned into 2 nights due to the fact that I couldn't keep anything down and my potassium level was low. I am now home and I am doing the best I can to take in the minimum of 50 ounces of liquid but I have not been successful at it. The most I have done is 28 ounces in one day. The reason why is I am experiencing a lot of pain when ever I swallow the liquid and it hits the top of my stomach and causes me to be in so much pain. Then it passes once it enters my stomach and I feel fine after that. Has anyone experienced this? I have been taking Prilosec for reflux etc which had helped but I still have this horrible pain. It's definitely not a swallowing issue because it goes down my esophagus easily but its when it passes from my esophagus into my stomach. This is the best way to describe it. It's so frustrating because it hurts so bad. It is worse when it's with cold liquid versus warm. I go for my one week follow up on this Tuesday. Anyone have advice on what this could be?

Hi..

I was sleeved on Nov 1 also. I ended up 2 days in hospital also but primarily because of nausea. I'm experiencing basically the same exact discomfort and I can't help but think it's just all the swollen tissue in the area. Did you also have hiatal hernia repair?

Hi ksmom, thanks for replying. No, my doctor didn't repair any hiata hernia. I never thought about it being swollen tissue. I hope to find out what it could be when I see my surgeon. Until then I will continue to push through in getting my liquids in. Where did you get your procedure done at? I got mine done in NJ at Cooper University Hospital.

Had the same issue. I stopped drinking the Water cold. I still struggle on the fluids but that pain went away at day 9

Carterbeauty83 I am in Las Vegas and had procedure at Desert Springs Hospital. I think it's just a baby steps journey and one day we will look back and say it was no big deal!!

Sherri~ yes Water hurt also so I added some crystal light which helped immensely.

Sit up straight when you drink and take tiny sips. Water was the hardest so I diluted my Protein shakes to get the Water in. I only managed 35-40 oz till day 7 but that was enough to keep me from being dehydrated.

That said, you should probably call your doctor to discuss this. You might need medication.

Try a warm broth... or even room temperature.

Just a follow up...my RN told me what I am experiencing is normal. My stomach just needs to heal. It is swollen tissue. So all is well I just have to tolerate the pain until it heals.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
