3rd day R-N-Y oost-op protein shakes question. Premier Protein shakes OK?

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone! I'm new here!

Had my RNY on Wednesday morning at 8:20a.m. I'm on my 3rd day post-op and I've had no major issues other than pain. I've not thrown up or anything. I keep Isopure down fine, Water fine, Protein chicken broth OK etc.

I was sent home saying two weeks post-op clears but then "shakes" were on the list.

Before I was discharged the hospitals bariatric coordinator came in and went over some of the dues and don't with me. She said Protein shakes were fine but specially talked about the house brand my doctors office sells AND like the unjury ones they also offer. Again she doesn't specifically work for my bariatric doctors BUT with them.

Grand Health Partners was the group that did my RNY btw.

Anyway I asked about Premier Protein and Muscle Milk because I have like 10 cases of those filling my frig.

The bariatric coordinator pauses and said "well, previously I've always told patients those were fine but recently I think with the last 6 months or so I had Grand Health Partners call me and ask me to stop recommending them post-op because they are not OK".

She said the did some amino acid tests and a bunch of other stuff on the various shakes and Premier and Muscle Milk were not good for you post-op. Again previous to this she said they were fine but these are brands GHP does not sell. Now is that because they are really not recommended or because they just don't sell them?

They sell Core Power, Unjury etc and recommend those!

My nut said premier was good but you don't get the full amount of Protein so keep that in mind. I'm almost 4 weeks post and only drink one for Breakfast most days.

I have premier Protein and yes it does have 30grams of Protein . My doctor told me to have at least 20-25 grams of protein in each shake which this one has more than enough. Total 80 grams of protein each day and 64oz of Water. I am 6 days post op and I get in about 2 1/2 shakes throughout the day, green tea, about 45oz of Water and some broth.

Premier Protein was recommended by my nut post op because it carries 30 grams of Protein. if you drink much more protein at any one given time, some of the protein is malabsorbed but 30 grams is just fine.

I have been drinking at least one daily for over two years now and it is approved by surgeons and nuts all over the place.

I had my RNY July 2, 2013. I did Premier Protein drinks for my preop 2 weeks and 4 weeks postop. Now I did have "the back door trots" BAD!!! Finally, my Dr said that I was more than likely Lactose intolerant. Sure enough. But fast forward to 6 months ago, I found GENEPRO non flavored Protein!! I LOVE it!! I drink coffee I am a coffee big time drinker. So I add 1 scoop of GENEPRO to my coffee every day and it doesn't change the taste at all!! So for me it is a WIN WIN!! It has 30grams of Protein so YAY ME!!! Now some people say that it doesn't have that much protein in it but I have read things on it and there was nothing about it not being 30grams. Also, how could they sell it without it having it? I will continue my use. I have fallen short on my protein forever and this has helped me so much. BTW Isopure is YUKKY. I commend anyone that can drink it. LOL

My Nutritionist and Bariatric team strongly recommended Premier Protein both pre and post for easy Protein. The only drawback to the Protein shakes were they made it necessary for me to begin mixing in some additional Fiber to my yogurt and other soft foods. In addition to Premier Protein, I've began to also use EAS Myoplex Original with 42 grams of Protein. I drink 1/2 to start the day and then the other 1/2 later in the day. I especially like their chocolate Fudge flavor.

I just had my 5 week post-op visit with my doctor and the bariatric team and I am down 64 pounds from my HW and 28 pounds from my weight on the day of my procedure.

I practicality live on Premier Protein. My nutritionist gave me several samples pre-surgery, and I buy them by the case at costco.

I would like to know more about the amino acid and other tests performed. Did they do a paper or have a way to share that information?

I'm 2-3 days post op also and was approved to use Premier Protein and genpro. So far so good with fluids but I'm with you in the pain department and miss that IV drip lol! I plan on using Premier Protein during my journey and luckily so far can still tolerate the flavor so I bought. Good Luck!

I had my vsg surgery in 2013. At the time my doctor said Premier Protein was good as well, but now my doctor said don't drink them they caused people to be Constipation really bad.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
