Afraid I'm going to suck at this

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I'm getting sleeved in 2 weeks! Starting pre-op diet Saturday (no idea what it entails - going in for NUT appt on Friday).

I'm having a lot of anxiety about succeeding at this, and doing it right. Not so worried about the surgery and immediate post-op, because I know I can't do much about how my body reacts to a major surgery. It is what it is.

But the weeks and months after... I'm worried I won't acclimate. I'm worried that I'll never re-learn how to eat food, or get bad reflux, or will get gallstones. I've done so much research on this beforehand, and I know what I'm SUPPOSED to do, but I'm scared I just will fail miserably in actually doing it. Really wondering how much of this I will learn naturally and how much of it I have to be 100% conscious of at all times. Every post-op person on these boards seem so... "with it" and that they've figured it all out. I'm afraid of not being one of those people.

Can someone tell me if my fears are valid? Am I just crazy?

My surgery is on Monday. I think a lot of people have the "what if I fail?" or "what if it doesn't work for me?" thoughts going in. I just keep telling myself I trust my surgeon and his staff and I will take it one day at a time, just doing what they say. They have all kinds of experience with people of all ages, different starting weights, slow losers, etc. I will do what they say and keep asking for help if I need it.

@@KaiserKid You're not crazy. I have a fear of failing as well. I bet many of us do. It's a full-time job to eat and drink at first - but I am assuming it becomes more routine at some point. I never thought I'd be able to stick with the pre-op diet and I did - 100% without cheating at all. I really think that helped me be prepared for post-op. I'm only a little more than a week post-op - but things are easier than I expected (so far anyway). I'm just taking it one day at a time.

Take a deep breath. I think most of us have had this fear of failure with the surgery at some point - or even at several points. Let's face it, we've failed at all other attempts before surgery so it is in our heads that we could fail here too.

Some of the things you mentioned, you have absolutely NO CONTROL over - so accept that. I'm talking about reflux or developing gallstones. If they are going to happen, they will. With the reflux - take your PPI, it may take some dosage adjustments to figure out what works best for you but you and your doctor will figure it out. If you do have a gallbladder attack - guess what? They can remove your gallbladder - a very common surgery. I know no one wants to have another surgery, but if you need your gallbladder removed at some point - it isn't the end of the world. So let go of your fear of those - they can be dealt with, IF they ever occur.

Speaking for myself - I don't have it all figured out - I am still figuring it out, and there are always new things to figure out the further out I get. It will be a constant learning process for what works FOR YOU. You don't have to have it all figured out right now. You will need to be mindful of your eating habits forever - that's part of a healthy lifestyle. It will take commitment and will be an adjustment but it can be done.

It is completely natural to have these fears. But try to channel that energy you are putting into being fearful, into learning and making conscious decisions and you will be successful. And remember - YOU ARE WORTH THE EFFORT.

I think it is particularly helpful on the tough days to have a list to refer to of why you are doing this and what you are looking forward to that the obesity has kept you from. I know this helps motivate me and keeps me from giving into the fears and giving up.

Hang in there! You can do this!

I'm not sure what posts you're seeing where people are 'with it'? I see post after post of people who are unsure, confused scared and frustrated. We all were at first, and still are at times!

Everyone is different, but honestly, whether or not you succeed is 100% mental. You are going to go through all the feelings I listed above, but the key is finding ways of overcoming them to keep moving forward. Research, listen to others who have been there, get professional therapy or join a support group. Try different things until you feel you're doing what works. Learn to adapt, and adapt in order to learn. Find not what works for everyone else, but what works for YOU. Don't get hung up on what's "right" or "wrong". Learn to FORGIVE yourself for the many mistakes you're going to make. I find the people who struggle get stuck in one of those emotional traps and can't figure out how to move forward, or are not willing to.

Do whatever it takes to figure out how to be successful, and you will be. Like learning to ride a bike, you'll be wobbly and may fall a few times at first, but once you get the hang of it, you just keep peddling until you get to where you wanna go!

Your fears are valid. This is a major change but I promise it's worth it I'm 10 days out and lost 17lbs and its amazing. My suggestion is walk as much as you can and read up look at you tube and see everyone's story that's what I did watching people lose weight has been amazing. To see how much people had changed in a short time.

Your fears are valid, but I think you will see post surgery that your new sleeve tool will really, REALLY launch you into success. For me, I like to feel good and not sick. Therefore, I am daily discovering what feels good (soft, healthy Protein mostly). Your body will tell you what it wants, and I would't be scared about failing. You will begin to want the good stuff.

Post surgery, don't be too hard on yourself. You might have craving for crap (it's mental), but that goes away. With your new stomach, it is hard to "fail", unless you deliberately try and sabotage yourself, which from what you wrote I can tell you don't want to do.

I think your confidence will sail after you get used to your new life post sleeve. And when the clothing sizes start to drop your confidence in yourself will grow even stronger.

Good luck! You'll do great. :)

@@KaiserKid - actually it is really good to get all that worked out in advance. Figure out the worst cases possible, what it takes to minimize the risk. If you can come to grips with everything that could go wrong it makes you stronger and sets you up for long term success. I am not worried about you, it's the polianish people that I'm worried about.

When I first started I worried about the same things. I think lots of us do. And you are right. There are some people who act so "with it" in regards to following the plan, but most of the ones I've seen had surgery ages ago. Therefore, they may not remember exactly what they did wrong. All they know is that they are happy with themselves now, so they focus on what they did right. This surgery is not the cure-all--it's the starting point! You will have a new stomach and that really helps put things in perspective so you can be able to make the right choices and CURE yourself.

For me, head hunger was crazy the first few weeks and I also kept comparing myself to the others on here who had no appetites or could eat less than I could. I had a pep talk with my NUT who assured me I was on the right track and as long as I listened to my body and ate the right foods I would lose. It has been 6 weeks at 2 days since my surgery and I have lost 40 lbs!! I eat when I'm hungry, I don't measure my food, I focus on maximizing my Protein intake and minimizing my carbs. Just do you, boo!! It will wall work out

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
