Hair is falling out and nails are chipping/weak

Recommended Posts

So... my hair is starting to fall out. And I have VERY thick hair, so it's not very noticeable to others but it is to me. And my nails are chipping and very weak. I am taking a Multivitamin and extra B12 supplement. I am getting 60 grams of Protein a day too. Why would this still be happening?

Many people lose hair as a result of surgery and anesthesia. Getting enough Protein is critical for health, weight loss, and to minimize Hair loss.< /p>

60 grams of protein seems really low. You may want to consider increasing your protein. It won't stop hair loss that is already in progress but should help going forward.

I was told to expect this after surgery, but that it would resolve over time and that the hair would actually come back even better and healthier. You have just undergone a total overhaul in your diet, so it's to be expected that a few adjustments and changes are going to happen. But as I understand it, this passes and it's not anything to worry too much about.

If you're actually getting 60g of Protein, you're in the window for a female - you should be between 50-70g/day. Guys are supposed to be 70-90g/day. Make sure you're getting your Water too, that's important. But I would say just give it time, because my surgeon and dietitian warned all patients of this possibility, prior to surgery. But you could always go in and see about a blood test, to see if you're having any deficiencies that the Vitamins aren't addressing.

Well could it be as simple as surgery is a shock to the system? Your body is trying to realign itself and hair is the first casualty. Cut restyle , it has to get better, do something before you have to call RotoRooter. The guy might not be handsome, but maybe he' ll have a brother or nephew?

In my opinion, you need to add more healthy fat to your diet. Every time I've ever gone on WWs, Jenny, etc., I've experienced the same. The only diet that did not have this effect was Atkins. High protein', high fat, low carb.

No supplements' or special vitamins' here, minimal hair' loss. Avocado, eggs, cheese', olive oil...

I had a traumatic fall 2 years ago and shattered my humorous. About 3-6 months post-op I had significant hair loss. I expect I'll experience the same. Good news is that it does come back eventually.

This is what I'm afraid of. How far out are you?

3 Months.

I'm 2.5 months and I'm starting to shed like crazy and the nails are a problem too. My dr says it's all part of the journey. I like the idea of a new hairstyle to help feel more confident. It's going to come back, but it does suck. Big time.

What worked for me was adding a powdered marine collagen to my Water everyday and drinking a cup of bamboo tea everyday. The bamboo tea is very high in silica and is great for hair skin and nails. This combination cut my Hair loss way down and helped with the dryness and brittleness I was experiencing.

I have always gotten plenty of Protein and that didn't make a difference. I also tried Biotin and that didn't work for me, but has worked for some people.

Good luck it usually gets better!

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
