When does the rapid weight loss generally drop off?

Recommended Posts

I'm about 3 1/2 months out from RNY. I lost 7 lbs last week. My pattern seems to be 2-3 lbs down one week and 3-5 lbs the next, but last week is a new record for me since the first month after surgery. I'm 13.5 from my goal and 33.5 from a "healthy" BMI just under 25% so I can certainly afford to lose a bunch more. I'm just wondering when the rapid loss generally starts to taper off because I'm concerned about the RNY weight loss masking some other health issue that also causes weight loss. Yes, I and my doctors do have reason to suspect something else, and I was symptomatic last week. Thanks for any input!

for comparison, the first six months or so (except for the initial big drop that first month), I lost 10-12 lbs a month. Months 7 up to about a year, I lost about 6-10 lbs a month

I'm not sure who your comment was directed at, Inner Surfer Girl? I'm not having an issue with a stall, have not in fact had one since week three.

This all depends on the person. I had rapid weight loss for the first 4 months losing between 15 and 20lbs per month. Then things began to slow down to about 10lbs per month until i hit the 1 year mark.

My last 25lbs took another 6 months to completely lose. There were some months where i was stalled completely and others where i would lose 3 to 5lbs.

When i did get to my goal of 165 I quickly surpassed it losing another 7lbs and then everything stopped in March. I was exactly 18 months post op. Now of course since March i have gained and lost that 7lbs multiple times but I am still below goal.

Best of luck to you!

Seven pounds in a week at 3-1/2 months out and at your weight would concern me. I hope it is all OK, but about 2 pounds a week or less would be my expectation for you now.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
