Advice Needed - Choosing to proceed or wait?

Recommended Posts

I'm currently in the pre-op stages of getting weight loss surgery. I have done all the pre-op tests and have been cleared to get a date assigned.

The only thing now is that I haven't made the final decision to go through with this. The reason for this uncertainty is the following:

I started to work on changing my eating habits and to work on nutrition and getting more physical activity in since back in January 2016. I have successfully lost around 120 lbs up to this month of September. My doctor and others have mentioned that perhaps working on losing more weight on my own with the habit changes I have been making should be something I should continue, and to post-pone surgery for a few more months to see how much more weight I can lose on my own.

This is where I am stuck. I'm struggling with deciding whether to try to lose more weight on my own as I have been doing and wait several more months for the surgery, or to go ahead and proceed with setting a date and having the surgery done sooner.

Anyone have any thoughts or advice regarding this thought process I am having? Did anyone have similar second thoughts or decide to wait longer before having surgery?

Thank you all for your support :)

I can't tell you what to do, but can only speak on myself. I have been very successful in losing weight several times throughout my life losing around 100 pounds to only gain it back. Since February I have lost 60 pounds with the Mediterranean diet and walking. I've had those same thoughts myself about continuing to diet and not moving forward with the surgery. I will be getting the surgery because I know my track record and want to utilize the tools (WLS) provides to help me be successful for the rest of my life.

I started my journey January 2016. I was dead set against Bariatric surgery. I lost 50 lbs. I was approved and got a surgery date. After much consideration and discussion with my team I decided to have VSG. It is another tool I use and I'm glad I didn't put it off.

It is up to you. Do keep in mind that there is an expiration date on all of your pre-op testing. My surgery was delayed for financial reasons so I had to complete a lot of pre-op testing twice. That added more time and more expense to the process.

The good thing is that by the time my date rolled around I was more than ready.

In my opinion, the major benefit to having surgery is that it works so much better than all of my pre-op weight loss attempts. By the time I had surgery it was almost impossible to just maintain my weight my metabolism was so broken with yo-yo dieting. I was one "diet" away from 600 pounds. I knew the next bounce would put me over the top and I was practically housebound and immobile.

Now, post-op, my efforts give me results.

If you are happy with the results by doing this on your own, my guess is that if you have surgery you will be thrilled with the results of the same amount of effort. The sleeve has really made a difference for me.

Best of luck with your decision.

I suggest looking at your patterns. Is this the first time you've really comitted to changing your life with weight loss or have you done it several times before and gained it back. For me I have a life history of gaining and losing with always going back to the. Gaining. I'm done with that. I think it's wonderful that you've done so well. There are so many factors in this decision, age, health issues, quality of life and history. Best wishes and great job.

I completely understand how you feel. I lost 99 pounds over the past six-months using a low carb/high protein/high healthy fat diet. Even though I was fulfilling all of my obligations to have insurance pay for the sleeve, I still had a little voice in the back of my head that was saying "you can do this without surgery." Then it hit me; even at 99 pounds down, I still need to lose another 100-110 pounds. When I met with my PCP in late August for my surgery clearance testing, she and I talked about it, and she agreed that surgery WAS necessary. I've lost this kind of weight 3 other times in my life, and I always gain it back. The sleeve will be a tool that helps me in the second half of my weight loss journey, and, most importantly, that helps me to maintain a healthy weight when I get where I need to be.

I got sleeved on Wednesday afternoon. I still feel like crap today, but I know that it is going to get better and better.

I wish you the best, and I hope that my experience can be helpful as you make you decision.

First of all, absolutely congratulations on your amazing weight-loss so far! That is a tremendous achievement.

I'm in a similar situation, icy, at least in terms of the decision that has to be made… I've dropped over 40, and am working with a trainer. Just got my date today... Boy I'm conflicted!

This is one of the hardest decisions to make - and make again. It is real, and serious. On the one hand we are going to do damage to our bodies and forever change how it works and our physiological relationship to food… (ice already changed my emotional relationship to food)

On the other hand, it's impossible to predict how hard it will be to keep this weight off.

In fact, the lifestyle change you're making now is exactly the same lifestyle change you're going to have to make anyway. And keeping it off will be just as hard with the surgery, as without it.

I'm looking at it this way:

The surgery will let me lose 70 or 80 more pounds that I may not realistically be able to do on my own… But it comes at the cost of my body being permanently altered. Is it worth it?

So, I'm still struggling… I'm super interested to hear how you're doing, and what is influencing your decision.

I can only speak for myself, but what the surgery did for me was to push a reset button on my relationship with food. I was successful losing weight the months before the surgery. Just as I had before so many times in my life. Having the surgery allowed me to rebuild my food profiles slowly while I was less hungry. Many of my cravings that I had for years went away. I enjoyed learning new meal planning and healthy planning. It is 7 months since surgery and I am 15 pounds from goal and I feel so healthy and finally in control. Good luck with your decision. I know it is a hard one to make.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
