Having a hard time quitting smoking

So I have done 4 weeks of high Protein low carbs/sugar diet successfully - no cheating. I am now on my full liquids a d next week will be 7 days of Clear Liquids before my sleeve surgery on October 12th. I'm feeling pretty good and down from 368 to 340.

What I can't manage to do is stop my end of night 2 cigarettes per day.. I can usually go weeks without smoking but I am finding that with the hunger crazing the smoking has become a very big addiction.. any suggestions?

I quit by getting a pneumonia 2 weeks before I was going to quit, that helped tremendously, but it's not to recommend ????

I guess you have tried sugarfree gum? I your situation I would go back to my wls manual/food plan and read when the cravings start. That will refocus your brain. If you need something to do with your hands, maybe research and write some nice recepies for mushies and Protein powder concoctions? All of those will be helpfull in the long run.

Good luck with quiting and your wls! I quit over 10 years ago and don't miss it anymore. But I will never try it again, just because I might get stuck once more...

Does that first line mean that you're trying to smoke two cigarettes daily? "Cutting down?" There's no such thing. Smoking is smoking; the amount is irrelevant.

Most people have a hard time quitting. They become irritable at best, near-homicidal at worst for a couple three weeks. Such is life.

Taking in extra oxygen helps greatly but briefly. Whenever you want a cigarette, inhale as slowly and deeply as possible -- feel your diaphragm expand -- and then let it all out as slowly as possible. Inhale through your nose, exhale through your mouth. Do it every time you want a cigarette.

Put the money you're not spending on cigarettes into a jar. Decide for yourself what you'll do with the money once you reach the amount you determine.

Head out of the house for a walk around the block when the urge is upon you.

Here is how I was able to get by: I keep telling myself that I'll have another cigarette, or at least a few puffs, after I've healed.

Maybe I will, maybe I won't, but I'm not a big fan of the concept of forever.

One thing that is for sure is that if you get caught smoking pre-surgery, they'll reset the clock on you, and you'll be back to square one.

I haven't cut down.. that is all I normally smoke. . In fact it's not usually very day either but I am going to try the breathing and see how that helps.. thanks! My biggest challenge is that my husband smokes so the cigarettes are always around - I don't buy them myself.

Definitely keeping busy is a good thing for me.. that's why I don't smoke during the day.. I tend to use it as my wind down time with my husband.. I'm thinking I just need to find a new way to wind down..

My surgeon said I could keep smoking all throughout so I did. I actually had a smoke an hour before I went into my surgery.

Btw my surgery was flawless, he did an amazing job and said I was a pleasure to operate on after having two difficult ones before me. I also cheated on my pre-op diet with a Big Mac the day before. Yep I did it and own it!!! Hence why I was getting the surgery.

I feel that these rules are so subjective, some surgeons make you stop smoking some don't, some make you do a pre op diet for a month others a week like mine. It obviously shows if you screw up they can still operate on you, they just use it as a way to scare you to following what they ask. The risk is not high so don't sweat it if you mess up here or there.

Smoking slows down the healing, that's why they want you to quite. More chances of complications if you smoke. Your stomach heals slower and it may proton your need for the liquid phase. It also affects your lung capacity.

I would rather be able to switch to mushies on schedule, rather than keep on destroying my body any further.

I hope you have the willpower for this last hurdle!

My biggest challenge is that my husband smokes so the cigarettes are always around - I don't buy them myself.

Ah, the truth comes out. Kick him in the shins and put him out with the dog. Don't kiss him.

I think she's looking for weight loss, not spouse loss. Smoking is a personal decision. Me having my wife continue to smoke was a great test for me.

      I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
      I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
      Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

      Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
