DEEP, DEEP HUNGER

Recommended Posts

Thanks @ Browneyedgirl41, oddly enough, I find cooking and baking relaxing! I don't feel hungry because I am smelling (not tasting anymore) the food. Stepping up with some type of exercise may help me change my food focus, tire me out and help with weight loss. My kids are grown, hubby is retired and is kind of a grazer, so I end up cooking for others, dad, grandkids etc. You are right, I grew up Italian, food is a huge part of our families traditions, show of affection..I never had any weight issues all my life till peri menopause after 43..

Yesterday I turned 60..60lbs.and sleep apnea are in my way of perfect health so I am on a mission to rid myself of both!!

We can do this! Keep up the good work!!

I have 100% Italian ancestry so I totally get the world revolving around food thing. I was svelte until I hit my 30's. I used to get lots of compliments on my figure as a very young woman. It is interesting to have seen life from both sides- from being someone who turned heads to ironically becoming invisible the bigger I got.

I used to have all sorts of hobbies- making jewelry, scrap booking, ballroom dance classes. I dropped all of them (depression struck) and now I concentrate a lot of time on my only child, a son in third grade. I would love to get into something new like knitting. Maybe that would keep my hands and brain occupied and away from food!

Happy belated birthday!

I have to take cymbalta, which is an antidepressant. They aren't HUGE pills... but they are capsules and bigger. So I am scared they will get stuck. I normally take 2 a day. Since surgery I have been taking 1 a day. Trying to lower my dosage a little. I would love to come off them, but the side effects from withdrawal are almost unbearable. I am noticing some headaches and the weird feeling I get when I haven't taken it. So I'm guessing it's starting to kick in and realize in not giving my brain what it's use to.

So the emotional rollercoaster I completely understand.... from both view points. The surgery and coming off anti depressants.

My 4 year old is loud and wants to yell... it makes my head spin. Everything is on my nerves, and my feelings are hurt because everyone around me can eat what they want, and I can't.

I take it too- one 60 mg capsule a day. Since it was in capsule form, I was allowed to swallow it right away after surgery and it goes down just fine but it's a medium sized capsule. Perhaps your pharmacy could give it to you in a different form?

I have tried to withdrawal from it. The brain zaps are horrible. Kind of wish I never started taking it but I was crying all the time. My son, who was 5 at the time, asked me, "Mommy, why are you so sad all the time?" That's when I knew I had to get on something for depression and it helps. It really does help but I sometimes would like to clear my body of it for awhile.

Tell me about it! My husband made pancakes for our son, who is now 9, this morning. I grabbed a Protein drink and high tailed it out of the kitchen. I used to love Sunday morning pancakes. I'll be able to partake again- someday, on a limited basis I hope.

I hope your 4 year old takes a nap today!

I am able to take them, I just have that fear that it's going to get stuck.

My husband took care of my son for a little while and I rested until I felt a little better. My head is killing me still... I would really like to try and go walk later this afternoon.

I have been on cymbalta since 2009, and i would love to come off them. If I could handle the withdrawals, I would, and I try and then find myself weak... because they are just horrible.

@@Browneyedgirl41 Be careful dropping your cymbalta dosage so recently after surgery. I know that the pills are tough, but try to take your full dosage. People have to ween themselves off that type of medication (SSRIs) very slowly or else the side effects will be intense. :-/.

Oh, mine is in capsule form and it is quite easy to get down. I would never mess with adjusting dosage or trying to wean off it (without a dr's care) especially right now. Besides, I tried months ago and decided just to stay on it. My body has been through enough! Thanks for caring enough to mention this, though. In the future I will talk to my GP about it, but only once I am good and healed from this. I can't take any more shocks to my system.

You poor thing. I get Migraines and have to take prescription meds (both preventative and to treat them when the preventative Med does not work). I hope your headache goes away soon.

Great! Sorry to sound preachy! I work in the field and have seen people try to do it on their own too many times.

No problem! You are right to warn people about trying to go off it cold turkey.

I have NOT had surgery, but I can tell you that I fought head hunger when I was on Mexican Diet Speed pills, "Lizard Spit" shots and when feeling sick. My brain didn't get WHY nothing tasted good, so I kept tossing more at it?

Scares me.

Look up taking Magnesium to keep you in balance, lots of Protein and good luck?

I felt the same way until I started on solid foods. It was a combination of actual hunger and head hunger. I'm about 6 weeks out now and it doesn't feel nearly as desperate as it did at the beginning. Not sure if this helps.

I don't really remember having any pain, maybe more discomfort. If you're overeating anything liquid or puréed, you can overdo it and cause that.

I had a pretty rough time the first couple of weeks, but it does get better!

It almost feels like a burp or something. It does it no matter what though. Kinda like my belly is gonna eat my insides. It might be digesting and I'm not use to it. I am gonna have to get use to all the feels and what they mean.

Are you on Prilosec or anything like that? I forgot to take mine one day and I thought my stomach was going to eat itself. I would talk to your surgeon if it's too annoying.

I was taking magnesium everyday for Migraine prevention but had to stop two weeks pre op because it thins your blood! I gotta start taking it again, on top of everything else. Good luck to you with your surgery.

Oh man, I know people who have gone to Mexico to get diet pills. I have never heard any of them called lizard spot lol! The crazy things we do to lose weight, right? I know I have been there!

A lot of burping- well, actually belching for me! I sound like Homer Simpson, but it feels so good. It's so unladylike, though! I take an antacid and a PPI and it still happens. Hopefully we'll either get used to it or it will subside over time.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

      2. Selina333

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

      3. Doughgurl

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

      2. Doughgurl

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
