Does anyone have a good exercise plan that has helped them loose weight and break through plateaus?

My surgery was on Tuesday and I started walking a mile a day on Saturday.

I plan on getting a personal trainer for one day a week and then going to the gym three days week.

At the gym, I plan on walking laps, building up to 5 miles a visit. I also plan on building up to working out on the elliptical machine for an hour.

I know I should weight light but I've never been good at that.

I'm also looking for alternative workout methods that might be more fun and just as effective.

Thanks!

My exercise of choice is swimming. I have been in the pool since I was cleared.

As to stalls, they are a normal, natural, and necessary part of the process of losing weight.

Are you are a good swimmer? I've never been. I can't swim straight. I wind up swimming into the ropes. The lap at my YMCA is pretty long and I don't think I can make it from one side of the pool to the other without stopping.

But I know how good swimming is for your physical conditioning.

Thanks!

Yes, I am a good swimmer, but it doesn't matter.

You can:

take Water aerobics classes (everything from low-impact arthritis classes to Zumba, Insanity, et)

Take swimming lessons

Water walk/run

Use water weights

Or, just attempt to swim laps.

I used to be a lap swimmer. When I started swimming again at my highest weight I started with water aerobics and worked my way back to lap swimming. For a while I did a lot of backstroke! Now, I swim laps for about an hour and do other things (water weights, water aerobics, water yoga, etc).

I hate to swim for exercise, but I do like Water aerobics. You can adjust the intensity as needed to get your heart rate in your target area.

Walking is great, but I like to mix it up a little...use the elliptical, the stair machine, bike, recumbent bike, rowing machine. And I know you said you don't like weights, but strength training is important. Doing a circuit on machines is kind of fun because you get instant gratification as you get stronger...I love being able to add a weight plate on a machine because I've moved past the last weight I lifted.

And last, mix it up as far as outside vs inside...I get bored with the gym, but also bored with my typical neighborhood walking routes. Get in the car and go somewhere different to walk or bike, take a different route around your neighborhood. I use the Map My Walk app to record distance but also to store routes.

Good luck!

Do you do free style laps? Or resistance training? Running in the Water?

About how long is your exercise session in the pool?

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
