Question on daily fat goals

Recommended Posts

I use MFP to track my intake. The default for Polyunsaturated and Monounsaturated Fat is zero.

Does anyone have a suggestion for the Saturated/Poly/Mono percentages I should plug into MFP?

The general rule that I have heard these days is that saturated fats should 1/3 or less of your total fat intake. I don't think that it makes much sense to try to set goals for the poly- and mono-unsaturated fats as they are so poorly documented in most of the foods that we eat and record that one can never reach such a goal on paper (look at most food labels and see how many list the poly- and mono- numbers.)

Philosophically, I never worried much about fat and carb levels while losing since between our Protein minimums and caloric maximums, there isn't room for much of either - our diets are defacto low carb and low fat, and generally nutritionally deficient in both. I just tried to get the best overall nutritional balance that I could with that remaining "non-protein" segment of the diet, supplement to make up the deficiencies as best I could, and look toward meeting those more specific goals in maintenance when I had more calories to work with.

I think it's just my OCD talking. Lol. Since they are set to zero by default, it drives me crazy to see those red, negatives each day.

On MFP, go to Home, then Goals.

My NUT gave me suggestion how to fill out the percentages.

So, for me, daily calories is 800

Fat 25%, which is 22g

Protein 40% which is 80g

Carbs 35% which is 70g

I never did anything with the Micronutrients box, I checked now, mine are at 0 also (Poly, Mono and Trans fats), but I never get any reds - negatives.

So, can't help you. There is a Help button and Community button, perhaps you can find the answers there.

I just try to eat mostly healthy fats -- olive oil, grass fed butter, fatty fish, tree nuts, avocados -- avoid trans fats, and then beyond that don't pay attention to amount of fat, kind of fat, etc. I figure as long as I stay within my calorie goals and get enough Protein, my fat intake will stay at a reasonable level.

For cardiovascular health, avoid sugar, engage in moderate to strenuous exercise regularly, and stay away from trans fats.

My cholesterol numbers have always been excellent, my triglycerides (most important IMO) are "amazing" as per my nurse practitioner, and other numbers are good too. Honestly I think it's an area where you can set more big picture goals than micronutrient goals and everything will work out well. Good luck!

I don't know the answer to this, as tolerating different foods post op is very personal, and it varies.

I started adding a teaspoon of sesame oil about 4 months post op, and it has been fine.

I use olive oil spray for cooking, and I have been fine with this too.

Have a rest from olive oil for now, and try it every few weeks, perhaps, and see how you go.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...
