Work from home after surgery?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, newbie here. I have my sleeve date scheduled for 9/29. I am an architect and my firm is being very supportive but I know I am slammed with projects and so I offered to work from home during recovery. I've read a bunch of different post op experiences and am wondering if I'm going to be able to follow thru and how comfortable I'd be sitting down behind a computer. I don't want to over promise and under deliver.

Everyone's recovery is different so you should not over promise. I didn't have any issues other than fatigue. You do need to rest as much as you can so your body can heal. Very important that you give yourself breaks.

I had my surgery on a Thursday and began a kitchen remodel in my condo the following monday. I didn't do the work but had a barrage of workers, dust and noise for 2 weeks. I survived and managed to nap daily.

Based on my experience, you may want to be careful for a few weeks post-op. My brain was pretty fuzzy and it was hard to focus for about a month post-op. Probably due to the anesthesia, lack of carbs/low calories, fatigue, and healing from surgery.

Don't be afraid to take it easy for a while.

If you do attempt to do detail work, you may want to make sure someone checks behind you and that you go really slowly.

If you recover as well as I did you'll be fine to do some work from home. Take at least two full days.

After the warnings of everyone is different, I was fine working from home on the 4th day. The 2nd I slept, and 3rd day, still kind of groggy. I was outpatient and went home the same day, the afternoon of my surgery...

Thanks for all the responses so far. I'm a bit of a lurker and reader and can't tell you how valuable of a resource this has been. I ended up lowering expectations at work and explaining I hope to be available the week following but don't count on me. My surgery is scheduledfor Thursday at noon, so I'm hoping by that following Monday (3.5 days) I'll be feeling up to doing a bit of work from home or at least replying to important emails. I also opened up the possibility that I'll be staying home for that entire week following the surgery.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
