Any tips for making it through the liquid diet?

Recommended Posts

I'm on a 2 week all-liquid diet, and while I'm certainly losing weight with it, it's driving me nuts. Officially I'm doing this for 2 weeks, but the end date is actually uncertain. My doctor wants me to do this until I can have certain tests done, and the hospital has been horribly slow at scheduling me. (The lady who does these things was on vacation for 2 weeks.) Also, there's the possibility the dr. will want me to continue the liquids only after the 2 week period. I'm on day 11, but I feel like there's no end in sight. (I don't have a surgery date at this point--the dr. wants me to do this before he agrees for sure to work with me.)

I've tried distracting myself, focusing on making it through 5 minutes at a time, and drinking tons of calorie-free fluids. I eat SF Jell-O with a baby spoon to make it seem like there's more there. I've even taken to sleeping more, so I won't feel hungry or sit around thinking about "real" food.

Those of you who have survived this stage--what did you do to help you make it through?

Make sure you have shakes everywhere you go. I'd take extras with you just in case. If you let yourself get hungry and you don't have a shake with you, that's when trouble sets in...

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
