My 1st dumping syndrome!

Recommended Posts

I'm 5 months out and have been careful with what I've been eating. Decided to head to the fair last night. Haven't been to one in a few years. Ate a cheesesteak minus the bread, sauce, onions and peppers. 60 minutes later. Let's leave it at that. Then a few hours later. Whoa! Definitely not a good feeling at all!

Wow.....a cheesesteak minus the bread, sauce, onions and peppers caused you to do that ?

I wonder if it was food poisoning and not dumping ?

That likely wasn't dumping. Dumping occurs when you consume sugars, starches and fried foods. If I understand you ate Protein and fat (comprised of the meat and cheese). The food may have been too rich for you, but you didn't dump.

At about the same time, 4-5 months post op, I had a dumping episode after minced beef. Soonest I ate it, it came back up.

I thought that maybe it was too fatty, but I ate lamb and veal, and I was OK with that.

Steaks, beef can be hard to digest, so I am still staying away from it.

Another dumping happened to me after a scrambled egg, and after ice-cream.

So, for me, fatty and sugary foods are not liked by my new stomach.

My NUT confirmed it was dumping, so I am in the small minority that can dump at times.

Not everyone dumps from the same thing. :) I dump from ice cream, and cream based Soups, but not fried foods or something simply because it contains starch.

My reason for questioning if the OP dumped is because it normally happens (for me) immediately.

I get the sweats, chills, and everything evacuates, often from both ends simultaneously.

Hot look, huh?

Yes, dumping happened to me immediately as well, plus I forgot to add my feeling of extreme tiredness and feeling dizzy also. Not nice feelings/results at all!

This is why I am careful with certain foods.

From what I read online about dumping syndrome. It did hit me about an hour later. I was in so much pain driving home. My mouth had that watery feeling from getting ready to vomit, which I didn't. It wasn't a pleasant feeling that's for sure. That was my first cheesesteak and fair food since my surgey. Good thing I didn't go for the fried veggies. Lol

Yes, not a nice sensation at all! Few times it made me so tired and unwell that I had to lie down and rest afterwards.

The strange thing was that I had no nausea, just I knew I had to throw up.

With the scrambled egg, my chest felt on fire, and it was going up my oesophagus, painful and burning, again no nausea.

Just ran to the bathroom.

With the beef mince I was so proud of myself that I took 30 mins to finish it, chew really well, and then had a shock that it produced a dumping episode for me.

These days for red meat I eat veal and lamb, and have no issues with them.

Yes, the fried veggies could have been sus too :)

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
