Going at it mostly alone

Recommended Posts

I dont have much family and friends here to support me in this. My teenage sons are oblivious. My mother nit pics and mostly just works my nerves. I dont have a boyfriend. However I have a guy friend who is taking me on surgery day. But it would be unfair to expect him to rearrange his life to look out for me long term. And I'm just wondering how am I gonna do this without the support I'd like from those around me. Any ideas?

There is no need for long-term care.

If you prepare everything you'll need after surgery, you'll be ready for just about anything and you'll probably feel greatly empowered. By everything you'll need, I mean enough Clear liquids for th time you'll be restricted to them, then enough to get you through each of the early stages on the way to solid food. Get laundry done in the days before surgery, change the sheets in the morning before you go to the hospital. Do some housecleaning before surgery. Etc., etc.

Your friend will be taking you home from surgery, I hope. That's more important than taking you to the hospital. In the days after surgery, maybe you and he can check in with each other just in case you do need a hand with something.

You'll be fine.

I live alone and was fine. I just stocked up with what I needed, had a lot of clean pjs and besides a ride home I was Okie doke!

I also live alone and was fine without help post surgery. Though I did find a pair of long handle tongs and a bamboo back-scratcher came in handy for picking things up without too much moving for the few days I had incision pain. Hope you get on ok.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
