Worried about gas pains after surgery

Recommended Posts

Hi there -

I have read some people experiencing bad gas pains after surgery - I am dreading this. I get bad gas pains maybe once or twice a year, but they are really painful ... I just hate it. I take Gas X, and rub by stomach in circles trying to get the gas out but usually stay up all night completely uncomfortable and in a lot of pain. Is there a prescription the surgeon can give me that will work better than Gas X ... or any other suggestions?

I am having the surgery on Sept. 20, and I take Probiotics for gas. It helps a lot.

I guess for BM's the Probiotics will work but for the gas after surgery I reading that it's the air they put in your stomach. Thanks for the info. I understand now what to look for. Thanks Guys!

No use worrying about something you can't predict or control. It sucks, but it's not the worst thing in the world. The more you walk, the more you move, the faster it escapes.

It's truly a small potato in this entire process. Promise.

(And if I'm wrong, you don't know where I live, so... :P )

I did not have the gas pains that some described. I felt my stomach very bloated and discomfort on my left side, but nothing in my shoulder/neck/back at all. I was so hooked up to many machines, they needed me to wait for a nurse to help me. Then there was a change in shift, so I had to wait nearly 9 hours before my first walk at midnight. I walked about four more times during the day. The discomfort got better each day but took a good week. I never took pain med once I left the hospital (day after surgery).

I felt the gas pains pretty strongly in my left shoulder. This sounds weird, but it worked for me (once I was a bit more mobile) - I got down on my hands and knees, then lowered my elbows and head to the floor. Basically head down, butt up. It seemed to help move the "bubble" and gave some relief.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
