Beyond Aggravated

Recommended Posts

I have been fighting for 2 years to make it through this process and get scheduled for my RNY. Now, when I finally see a light at the end of the tunnel, I hit an obstacle. My surgery was approved prior to doing the testing. Everything was going great, preop scheduled for 8/25. Then I got a phone call today from the surgeons office, my preop has to be cancelled because I have been diagnosed with moderate to severe sleep apnea. I have to be fitted for a CPAP before they can reschedule unless my doctor is willing to write a letter clearing me for surgery without the machine. Of course that is not happening. I just want to cry.

@@Gordita81 That sucks. My surgeon requires all those tests prior to approval. Hopefully you'll get clearance.

Our surgeon has us do nutrition and psych first, he submits for approval then does the rest. I guess just to be sure that we don't go through all that for nothing.

I have no doubt that I will get cleared, it has just been delayed until I am fitted for the mask because anesthesia won't allow it until they have the settings. I just sucks that I did everything I could to ensure this was all done on time, I didn't want anymore delays, now this.

I am sorry this happened. Hopefully you will be able to get in and get your Cpap pretty quickly. It really does not take a lot to fit you for a mask.

Have you made an appointment yet?

My appointment is for 2 weeks from now (which is why preop was canceled). If medical approves it before that appointment, they will move my appointment up.

Having sleep apnea shouldn't stop your approval. Its actually a comorbidity factor. Its very important to be diagnosed before any anesthesia. Safety first. Best wishes.

I understand that it's for safety reasons. I am not worried about being approved, just aggravated because it has been delayed. After 2 years of waiting and now I continue to wait.

Unfortunately this process is long and can have delays along the way. You are almost there! It is so worth it in the end, at least from my perspective.

I ironically had to be retested and delayed to show I did not need my mask any longer...by like 1 point

I'm surprised they waited that long to test you. My surgeon sent me to be tested after his first visit with me because sleep apnea is so very common with his patients. It will go by fast but I understand how frustrating it is to have to wait. Get in ASAP and get fitted then you'll be on your way!

I would think that all the stuff that's required for the surgery, we would be doing the same tests. Yes there are those that might need more, the same base tests should be required from the insurance companies. I don't understand why certain insurance companies deny people surgery even if they've done everything that was required. I hope I have put my words together for you to understand.

Medical has denied my Titration study! Now I am worried that I will never get the surgery. Everything else has cleared. No CPAP measurements, anesthesiology says no surgery. Can this really be the end for me? ????

It may though for safety reasons. I ran into a similar issue after waiting for my CPAP and my follow-up appointments were delayed; after everything was sorted out, I asked my pulmonologist why he wouldn't clear me before I used the CPAP. He told me it's because he wants the CPAP to fit properly due to the drugs immediately postop. He told me sometimes patients are so drugged up that they stopped breathing which is why the CPAP is important.

Why did they deny your titration study? If you tested positive for sleep apnea - you need a titration before getting the CPAP. That doesn't make any sense. Where did you have sleep study done?

sleep study was done at New England Pulmonary and sleep Clinic in RI. I will be making phone calls tomorrow to figure this all out. Something just doesn't seem right at all.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
