Prednisone and weight gain Pre Op

Recommended Posts

Augh... I was on vacation and I came in contact with something I was allergic to. My legs swelled and I had a very nasty angry looking rash. The local er gave me prednisone. Normally I would not take it because I get really bad mood and eating issues even taking small doses. However the swelling pain and itch was intolerable. So my weight is up which is frustrating because in 3 weeks I have my final weight in. I was told from month to month i had to maintain or lose. I'm down 15 total but so far have 3 pound weight gain since starting this medicine. I'm retaining Water and other parts of my body are swollen. I'm drinking a lot of water but the return is not where I think it should be.Any tips on getting this weight back down? I have 6 more days of the prednisone to go. (I have dropped an email to my doctors on this but I would like to hear if any one has had a similar experience)

@@busybeebug I just came off of a medrol pack on Tuesday. Yesterday I got a stomach bug? and have lost 5 lbs in 2 days. I don't recommend this solution. ????. Have you tried lemon Water or tea - something to act as a diuretic? Could you taper off the prednisone sooner? Hope all goes well!

Very similar results with two different steroid meds I was taking for back injury during my pre-op. I told my surgeon and NUT about the meds and they understood.

I don't remember what the gains were.....but I was surprised. At the time I didn't know what to attribute it to as I'd been losing at a steady rate......changed nothing other than begining another cycle of these meds and the scale showed gains.

It was odd, too, because I was sleepless for a lot of the time on those meds....figured I'd be burning more calories then and see loses......only I didn't.

Within a week of completing the cycle, I noticed the gains stopping. Within 2 more weeks it began to drop again.

I have 5 more days until I could come off the meds. I will try some mild diuretics. Hopefully once I get off , the trend will reverse and I can get back to normal. I'm still waiting to her black from the Dr office

I was on prednisone also but I had high doses for MS. Just eat healthy and Don't give into any cravings! I know that's easier said than done but what I did that helped was... increased my Protein by drinking 3 chocolate Premiere Protein (90g total protein) drinks between meals a day. I tried to stay as close to my daily caloric intake as well. The increase in protein helped to control that constant hungry feeling and the chocolate satisfied my cravings. Continue to drink 64 oz+ of Water also. Sticking to your weight loss plan when prescribed prednisone is the most important thing to do to maintain/lose weight. If you've been following your weight loss plan the 3 pounds you're seeing on the scale will go away after you stop the prednisone because it was cause by temporary swelling of the body. That's way I don't weigh myself when I'm on prednisone but I do follow my weight loss plan. Don't worry and stay honest with yourself. At least you informed your Dr and have 3 weeks until your next weigh-in. That will give your body time the for the swelling to reduce. I went through this last month and dropped 6lbs. This month was 12lbs (weigh-in was yesterday) because the rest of the swelling was gone. It is challenging but not impossible. Good luck, you got this busybeebug!

I think as long as you stick to your eating plan and let them know ASAP about the prednisone and weight gain, they will completely understand. This is out of your control. I'm sure you will be fine

The best thing you can do is just drink a lot of Water unfortunately prednisone does that and you'll probably continue to have that problem until you're off the medicine. It's totally expected

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
