Hey everyone. I'm very new in this process. I met with my surgeon last week. I have my egd tomorrow. Hopefully the process will be very fast. I'm cash pay and don't have all of the paperwork to deal with.

My quest2is how important is it to cut out caffeine? I had done tone of research myself but I haven't met with my surgeon's nutritionist yet. I am a caffeine fiend. I work 13 hour shifts and thrive on caffeine. I tried to cut out caffeine today and have a horrible headache. Is it really necessary to cut caffeine completely out? What are the benefits?

Any idea put and advice is greatly appreciated.

I will be having surgery next Monday and I had to cut out caffeine. Is has been rough, but I've been taking Motrin to help with the headaches. The main reason for stopping caffeine is because it is a natural diuretic and can cause dehydration. At least that's what my nutritionist told me.

@@Della2002 Caffeine is a diuretic so especially during the immediate post-op stage - it's important to limit or cut out caffeine so you don't become dehydrated. Caffeine can also cause ulcers and some say interferes with Calcium absorption. Talk to your nutritionist about what they recommend.

I don't think you should be having Motrin with surgery so close. Usually you're not allowed NSAIDS for at least the week before. Check with your surgeon.

I last took Motrin on Monday, and I will not take any more before surgery. I knew that was the last day I could take it. I'm gonna have to try Tylenol if I get anymore headaches before Monday.

I never gave up caffeine. It was programed into my plan for the very start with my team's knowledge.

I have to drink an equal amount of Water for every cup of coffee/tea that I drink.

Fair enough.

The caffeine/diuretic debate is ongoing.

In the end of things, you really must follow YOUR bariatric team's advice.

In my case, the Migraines were more harmful than the caffeine intake.

I was also a cash patient, but didn't have to give up caffeine prior to surgery, although I did give it up the week before just to stay more relaxed. The 'delivery method' of the caffeine is probably the important part. For instance, drinking a cup or two of black coffee/tea per day will most likely get a different reaction from your team that if you drink 4-6 sodas per day!

Speak with your NUT and they will guide you as to what your surgeon allows/prohibits. It's best to stick with the plan your surgeon/NUT prescribe as each one is different.

I wasn't allowed to have caffeine during my 5 day liquid pre-op diet and for 2 weeks after surgery.

Start slowly decreasing your intake and you shouldn't get the headaches. During my 6 month supervised diet I slowly cut back so by December I was off of coffee completely and had no headaches at all.

In my case I was not allowed to have coffee for 2 months after surgery. The Dr said something about the acid causing problems with the 3 surgeries he did on me. I gave it up 1 month before surgery.

Started drinking it again mixed with my bariatric Protein hot chocolate at 2 1/2 months post op. I only drink 1 big 16 oz cup of the mixed coffee/protein hot chocolate in the morning and get plenty of Water during the day.

I quit caffeine recently and I found that it got easier by about the 5th day. The headaches stopped at that point anyway which made life a bit more manageable. It just takes time. You can do it!!

I laid off all caffeine for the first few weeks post-op and then my surgeon allowed me to have coffee again.

It's a much enjoyed beverage. I drink 2-3 times the recommended amount of Water daily, too.

All is well.

I've had conflicting instruction from my NUT vs my surgeon. The NUT seems to give blanket answers that aren't really geared toward the individual.

Seek the experience and practices around here from those who've had the same procedure you are having and have lived with it a while.

I had previously gave up pop/soda way before my surgery came into play BUT I am a huge coffee lover...we were not aloud caffeine during the 14 day prep diet...first week was awful, second week wasn't so bad....and I started back with coffee prob 2 to 3 weeks post op....but where I use to drink 3 to 4 cups a day I have one....not for any specific reason that is all I want so all I take....I still like my morning coffee....

      On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
      Soooo I am coming to a realization
      of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

        Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

        Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

        I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

        I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

        BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

      Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
