Becoming vegetarian after surgery.

Recommended Posts

I'm 4 months post op and I'm finding it really hard to eat meat especially chicken. I find the taste to be raw like even though it's fully cooked and seasoned. Anyone else have this problem? Has anyone become a vegetarian because of a problem like this?

I don't have trouble with chicken. I just don't like it! Nasty... ;)

Many WLS folks have major taste changes post operatively. Every couple of weeks, try eating meat---tiny bits. Usually beef will be the last dense Protein to be tolerated. Don't give up the ship!

I thought about becoming a vegetarian once, but am EXTREMELY allergic to all beans/legumes. Oh, bother... :)

Yes, some people's taste change. It is not always permanent. If you don't like chicken now, it's fine. But give it a try again in a few months, if you want.

chicken is hard on me as it is on a lot of people and I am three years out. I can eat it in chicken salad, or with lots of sauce or gravy but plain chicken? Nope. Thunk.

Try seafood! Lighter fish, shrimp, scallops, CRAB (in legs or blue)... All high in Protein and can be prepared in a million ways. SO GOOD.

I still like all the same foods... I don't think healthier eating as a vegetarian is automatic - chips, Cookies, candybars, pizza, full fat cheese, white bread, rice, potatoes, white Pasta, cake and pie for example have no meat in them but aren't real healthy. But so long as you do your research so as to make healthy choices and get a balanced diet, vegetarian eating can be healthier than omnivore eating.

I still eat the flesh of animals, but really try to emphasize eating finfish, shellfish, chicken and turkey for my "meat", and to sample from beef and pork only occasionally.

I hated meat at first, it just made me too full no matter how little I ate. I kept trying. Switched to chicken thighs as the breast I could't seem to get down. Beef still not that Great. I eat maybe an ounce of meat at a time because it feels me up so fast.

I considered myself a vegetarian for a while after surgery but stopped when I could tolerate meat. I was tired of Beans and the carbs were freaking me out!!!

Couldn't do eggs either, but no problems now... I have an eggs steamer and love the texture a bit better than boiled.

If it doesn't work for You at first , put it Sade and come back to it later.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
