I can't say how relieved I am that I found this thread! I have had one helluva ride trying to get ins approval. I started in September and weighed 352, well by the time I found out that I had to do a Dr guided weight loss study (after all of my other appts were finished and send off to ins and they denied me) it was February and I had gained 8 lbs. I proceeded to do the weight loss study and couldn't lose any weight, just yo-yo'd 3 lbs back and forth. I just finished my weight loss study Tuesday, and the NP will get the Dr's signature on everything and then off to the surgeon's office and to ins from there. I'm an absolute nervous wreck that the ins will think that I didn't try to lose the weight, even though I did everything that my Dr told me, and deny me again.....its been such a nightmare trying to get this surgery that I KNOW will save my life. I don't have any co-morbidities but my BMI is above 60....I'm just another "healthy" big girl and it sucks.

Anywho, thanks for reading my little rant. I hope to be very active on this forum as I progress with my journey...its been long so far but I know I'm just beginning. :D

@ Don't worry - I didn't lose much during my supervised weight loss and was approved. I tried - but my Nutritionist said not to worry that it's difficult to lose with PCOS and that's why I'm having surgery.

Yes. Me too. Thankful for this thread.

I was 269 at my first visit in January. 280 at my highest. 277 at my last visit on 7/12. Waiting for insurance approval. Doctor told me he would do my surgery if I continued to lose :(.

They must know that we wouldn't need the surgery if we could lose well on our own, right?

See and its crazy because on them my 600pound life shows they have to lose like 100pounds before they have surgery but i get it because it's more of a risk or something. But i hope and pray we get accepted!

I've gained over 30 lbs during my 6 month supervised program. My doctor never said anything about getting denied if I gain weight- they just told me not to LOSE any because it would drop my BMI too low to qualify.

Thanks :) For sure. I've already given up so many of those naughty things - but I think I am going to try replacing Breakfast and lunch with Protein shakes until my weigh in August 5...

Then I'll have the weekend before I start my pre surgical liquid diet before surgery August 22.

I'm so done with people telling me to have a "last meal" I think that is kind of defeatist at this point but I do plan to go to city island for crab legs with my husband August 7.

He deserves it since he is wholeheartedly supporting the cancellation of his 50th birthday vacation because my surgery got scheduled the week we were supposed to be away.

Great hubby! I was a similar situation, had already started paying into a trip to Europe with my daughter, way in advance of knowing I'd be facing a WLS right before the trip was scheduled to depart (it was sponsored by some of her teachers thru a tour company, so no control over the dates). When I knew my surgery would most likely prevent me from going, and I wasn't sure if I'd lose the $ I had already put into it or not, I talked to my husband and he said pretty much the same thing, he wanted what I felt was best for me. Super tough decision because I was so looking forward to having that trip and memories to share with my daughter, but the way I saw it, the surgery and weight loss would allow me many, many more opportunities for the same well into the future. It is a great thing to have a supportive family going thru this journey. And great news! Two weeks after having my surgery I found out the travel insurance carrier would honor my request for a refund, and I got back almost all the $ I had put in...yay!

@@loca_lette813 when I had my first appointment with Dr., I was 271. My insurance requires 90 days supervised weight loss. During my middle appointment I was up to 283. By my last appointment I was down to 276. They just submitted to my insurance (BCBS Federal) yesterday so I don't know yet if I'll be approved because of the weight gain. I'm really nervous, but Drs office thinks it should be okay...

You should be ok....I also have BCBS Fed insurance, was up a few lbs on my 2nd weigh in, then lost like a pound or 2 on my third weigh in, and I was still approved. Granted, my pre-surgery BMI was 42, and I had high BP for years, but I think the BCBS Fed is one of the better carriers for approvals.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
