So I'm now 13 days pre-op revision from gastric sleeve to by-pass and I didn't have to deal with a drain for my first surgery. Can someone tell me their experience with it? How long it was in / how often the had to empty it / if they had any difficulties or discomfort...

I had one. It was inconvenient to deal with showering. It was uncomfortable, but not painful. Emptying wasn't difficult or gross or anything. I can't remember exactly how often, but a few times a day was sufficient. It was uncomfortable having it removed, but a relief to be done with it.

I didn't have a drain for my sleeve surgery.

I did have one with my spinal reconstruction. My surgeon told me that he was going to pull it out on the count of "3".

He pulled it out at "2"!

Sneaky bastard... :)

Really it happened so fast that it was out before I had time to dread having it pulled.

I have been forewarned that I will be coming home from my skin surgery with 6 drains.

OH MY!! I let you know how that goes..... ;)

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
