What is general recovery time

Recommended Posts

I am new to the site. My Dr just recommended the band to me and I have not yet attended any preliminary meetings or seminars to find out more about it. I haven't seen anything on the web regarding post-op recovery time? Also, what is the postop diet and how long before one can return to "normal" foods (albeit in smaller amounts). Thanks for your time

The answers to these questions really vary with the individual. Your best source of info would be your doctor who would make these decisions with you. My personal experience. I would have been ready to go back to work in a week-if the job wasn't intensely physical. Your major limitation after that time is lifting. If you had a job that required lifting you would have to take off additional time or have your job responsibilities modified.

It took me about 3 weeks to get back to regular foods, but I think my doctor is more liberal about this than most. Often times I see people reporting 6-8 weeks. Good luck.

Trystelle is right on target, it varys SOOOOO much from person to person. I had four weeks off, could probably have gone back in about two but things came up (not band related). Every doc it seems is different in their post-op diet and their pre-op diet plan. That information you should get from the surgeon you choose. I was about 5 or 6 weeks until regular foods. Trystelle's doc is quite liberal. But the key is to follow YOUR doc's advice. Just because her doc said it was okay for her, doesn't mean it was okay for me.

Welcome to LBT!

I agree, everyone is different and should follow the advice of thier personal doc. However, that being said, I had surgery on Friday and was back at work on Monday. I would say by Wednesday or Thursday of that week I was feeling almost 100% back to normal. My doc required 2 weeks liquid, 2 weeks mushy following surgery however, mushy included chicken salad, tuna salad, crackers and other things I found surprising. Good luck!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
