Eating after surgery

Recommended Posts

I had my surgery on 6/29/16, I'm feeling great, pain is manageable with the pains meds given and I could easily fool myself into thinking that I didn't have any surgery if it wasn't for the incisions.

However, I'm having problems eating. I can easily drink Clear liquids at room temperature but the moment I switch to a Protein shake, yogurt, or applesauce I start having spasms or pain in my stomach. I take baby sips. In almost a week, I have only drank about 10 oz of Proteins shakes and 2-3 oz of yougurt plus all the Clear Liquids. Is this normal? How long before I can start handling anything other that clear liquids with more ease? I need more nourishment in my opinion. Any feedback is appreciated.

Same surgery day here, but my diet for a week after was ONLY Clear liquids...yogurt and Protein drinks don't start until 7 days out (today). My doctor told me he didn't care about Protein until at least 5 days out because of the almost guaranteed nausea. I had my first added Protein powder on Monday and got about 20g that day and 20 the next. Now that the first week is up, I can add yogurt and other non-clear liquids.

Obviously it's too late for this info now, but I think what you experienced was normal given you were allowed to have those other fooda. Maybe take a day or two to just focus on clear to see is you can settle things down, and possibly talk to your NUT.

Hi, I was sleeved on 6/30. I just went for my post op visit today and only got my 'ok' for yogurt, pudding, milk and Protein shakes today.

I think you added things too soon-clear liquids and Jello for a whole week is the norm. I did get the 'ok' however to do this: I tried the unflavored Protein Powder in MIO-yuck???? so I tried it in broth(broth can't be too hot and you do have to really stir it in to mix), and It's pretty tolerable! 1/2 pk or 1/2 scoop(10g Protein ) in 8oz broth. Four times a day I had 4oz. See if that helps w energy and hunger. Gradually add the shakes and yogurt back into your diet. Good luck!

My surgery date was 6/29, and I am still having problems getting my 30gm of Protein in as well as my 64oz of Water intake. I'm always feeling full. I use powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury Protein powder which I add to broth but I'm only able to take in about 6oz. I can't tolerate the Protein shakes or smoothies I make because they are too sweet. Do anyone have any suggestions?

30 grams of protein seems extremely low. You can get 30 grams with one Protein shake. Are you ate that 30 grams is your protein target?

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
