So I bit the bullet today and told someone I work with about having bariatric surgery. She mentioned to me her doctors have recommended it to her. The next thing out of her mouth really shocked me. She said she knows she can do it by eating get right and exercising. Do people really think that having bariatric surgery is a miracle and you wake up the next day skinny. Don't they realize it us a tool in the journey and you still have to eat better and exercise.

Just had to vent...

Some people are just igorant and rude. I use to worry about what people would think about my decision for WLS. I know in my heart that this is for me. I can't wait for the surgery. Hopefully it will be in September or October. Tried all kinds of diets and unfortunately no success. Good luck with your journey...

Don't they realize it is a tool , you still have to eat better

@@kittykatlover

No, many don't believe/understand that

i hear my family saying things like,

"oh, you don't have to do anything special now with eating"

you had surgery - you have a small stomach - you have it easy

what, are you kidding me!!!? :o

(i don't say that)

i used to "defend" myself and the surgery

tell them that's not the way things work!!

never was a reason to speak up like that,

don't do anymore

many people choose not to tell OP about surgery

one reason would be your friends response

good luck with upcoming surgery

I used to think that to. I had been told for years that I needed it and I wasn't ready to take such a permanent syep yet when I didn't feel like I had exhausted all other options first. It just means they aren't ready to take that step. I always knew surgery would be difficult, that's why I put it off.

Your success might convince her to take her doctors recommendation seriously! Hope she sees the light and gets healthy. But this is about you right? Congrats on your decision!

Because there are too many idiots out there, and I would consider myself a private person, I chose only to tell my immediate family. I told my coworkers that I would be out 2 weeks having Gall Bladder surgery. That way no one has to form an opinion.....The surgery is a catalyst but it is in no way the easy way out. Its a life changing decision that will ultimately give you a longer life and a healthier one.

My answer to them immediately after that kind of answer " I know i can do it by eating get right and exercising" is and will always be "You go Girl I know you can do it" and leave it at that.. ;) ;) ;)

Gah! I use to get responses like that too. The last one was, "I really think you are selling yourself short. You can do this without surgery." Responses like that minimize your struggle and journey. I don't talk about it anymore with people who are not my immediate family or best friends. It's a small group of 6 people on this planet.

I have told two people at work—and have requested absolute privacy which they have honored. Should it get around though, I know comments like this will come out.

Don't defend. This is a TOUGH decision we make, and if someone says "they could do it," then they need to follow through. Reactions like that are a mirror of their own trepidation. Rock on lady.

The only person I've told is my wife. She is the only one that needs to know.

I tell my coworkers what my diet is it they ask how I'm losing weight and they think I'm just crazy.

I thought for a long time I could do it myself because I would always have success for a while with low carbing. The thing that people who haven't had WLS don't know is that post WLS it is a lot easier to stick to a healthy eating plan because of the lack of hunger and mental/physical disconnect. WLS isn't the easy way out, you still need will power, but if it makes it a lot easier to resist. I would have never imagined a life without feeling hungry and having head hunger rule my life. People just don't get it.

And everyone thinks they are going to be in that magical 5 % that lose weight on their own and keep it off.

I have an associate who told me their Dr told them to consider WLS because their weight keeps fluctuating. They said they didn't want to give up carbs and would rather be fat. You can't help some people.

When she's still obese and you're not - just say "how's that diet working for you?"! Hehehe.

I have only told a few friends. Once you tell co workers it opens up a whole world of unsolicited advice that doesn't need space in your head.

Thank you everyone. The only reason I told her was because she is my Director and I wanted her to be aware of what was going on. I have been taking quite a bit of time off lately and don't want it to jeopardize my job. I did ask her not to day anything to anyone and I believe she will hold up on that.

Glad I am doing this. Reading everyone's stories have been inspiring.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
