Pre-op Diet - Week 2 Stall

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I started my pre op diet of high Protein, low carb, low calorie (1000-1200 a day) last Monday and managed to lose 12 lbs in week one. In the first 3 days of week 2 I havent lost an ounce. If anything I have actually consumed fewer calories this week so I am a bit annoyed.

Did this happen to anyone else? Is a 3 day stall enough to need to change things up already?

Thanks!

Amber

@@BigInBoston are you supposed to lose a certain amount to get approval for surgery (shrinking the liver)?

I guess because I wasn't told a specific amount to lose I didn't have a "stall" on my pre-op :/

Talk to your doctors/NUT office for guidance if you are expected to lose a specific amount.

Don't worry about it. The purpose of the pre-op diet is to shrink your liver, not to lose weight. Just keep following the plan and you will be fine.

And if it gives you any comfort, pretty much the exact same thing happened to me. I lost 12 lbs the first week of pre-op diet and 2 lbs the second week. I didn't weigh myself every day though -- I would advise getting out of that habit because sooner or later (like now) it will make you unhappy and stressed to just focus on the numbers on the scale. Good luck!

I barely lost any scale weight on my pre-op diet because it was 105 with 90% humidity every day and I was retaining Water like a pool.

Shrinking your liver is what matters, not the scale.< /p>

Also you don't lose everyday. It just doesn't work like that, no matter how heavy you start.

@@jane13 Yes I do have a weightloss goal before surgery (30lbs). In the past I have been able to drop that much weight in 4-5 weeks (just not keep it off) so I was hoping to do the same this time so I can get cleared for surgery. Thats the only reason I have been obsessively weighting myself everyday. That's not something I intend to keep up.

I have an appointment with my dietitian next week so I will just check in with her to see if she has any recommendations. Thanks all.

I think loosing 12 pounds is really great. I am in week 2 , with surgery 5 days away and I have lost a total of 6 pounds.

And I know I'm hungry!!. Hope it comes off easier after surgery.

@@BigInBoston Consuming fewer calories can make you lose less weight. Your body goes into starvation mode and holds on to what it has (especially after a large loss the week before). It has also been very warm out this week (I'm in Rhode Island) so it's important to get even more fluids in or your body will retain Water. Stick with the low carb, high Protein diet (make sure to get enough Protein and fluids) and you'll get where you need to go! Good luck!

@@BigInBoston - the amount you want to lose (30lbs) is based on your own personal goal I am guessing.

My question was asking if the Doctors office or if Insurance was requiring a specific amount to be lost.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Anyone had the TORe procedure? How did it go? How much weight did you loose?

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
