Getting VSG in August at the age of 54

Recommended Posts

I am 56 and was sleeved on 9/14. So far no complications, not much pain (after the gas pains went away), trying to keep walking and stay hydrated -- good luck to all of us!

Wondering if anyone else had surgery at my age? If so, any advise or words of warning?

I had my SG at the age of 52 and I am now 55. I lost from 245 to 225 before surgery. Then after surgery I lost down to 165. After that I gained up to 202 on snack foods etc. but went up gradually until a couple of months ago. The VA had a re education class called bariatric back on track class. I lost down to 191. The surgery went great for me. I broke my arm in 2014 at the head of my shoulder. A steel plate and 14 screws from surgery and It healed completely. I attrubute it to the Vitamins I am taking religiously not to mention all the Protein we have to eat. I can't eat any complex carbs and loose any weight without vigorous exercise. Metabolism must have been rock bottom. It is much better now.

My plan of attack has been 3 ounces of Protein and a watery fruit at every meal and I have lost on average of 2 pounds per week. 3 meals per day. I have also found eating 3 dates per day helps to keep me regular not to mention curbing that sweet tooth.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Anyone had the TORe procedure? How did it go? How much weight did you loose?

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
