Has anyone experienced a leak due to drinking protein prior to 5 weeks?

Recommended Posts

How did you do without Protein for the first two weeks? This is the first other case where these were the instructions. I was with the surgeon of excellence in a center of excellence as well.

Ok. I emailed my doctor and this is her response.

Every type. Prohibited. There are studies that promote leakage.

I would LOVE to know what studies show this. It is the first I have ever heard of anything like that. All the studies I have seen are about the importance of Protein.

Yes I would love to see them too. However I'm not even going to bother. I found another NUT locally that I will be working with. I just cannot take the chance of not having Protein for 5 weeks.

My surgeon's nurse called me a few days after I got home and I asked her about the clear liquids only and no Protein for 2 weeks after surgery. She told me it was to give my stomach a chance to heal. I guess so it didn't have to work at digesting anything. I wasn't hungry though I did have dreams about food! And I lost about a pound a day during those 2 weeks.

My surgeon is not allowing me to drink Protein until week 5 because of leakages. I asked her in an email why I can't introduce Protein until week five and this is what she says :

it is to prevent leakage because of the consistency of protein.

Has anyone else ever experienced this?

Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

No, that's ridiculous. By five weeks I was cleared to eat most solids.

That actually sounds pretty scary to only have broths for 5 weeks. You're going to feel like crap and be weak as a kitten and the damage to your muscles, and oh my dog the hair loss....

I definitely would check in with a nutritionist familiar with the sleeve surgery ASAP because this doctor sounds a bit off.

And for what its worth, my doc is a nationally recognized training surgeon for this procedure, and also a center of excellence, and I was on Protein drinks the very next day after my surgery. Clear fluids (including the Protein ones) for 3 days, and then I was cleared for all liquids after that. He said it was vital to get both fluids and protein in and keep sipping every hour to promote healing, and also to support muscle and brain function, and to keep my metabolism up.

I'm sorry for the misunderstanding. It was Clear Liquids for two weeks, full liquids 2 weeks and the 5th week add a protein supplement.

Your doctor sounds like a quack.

I was given a Protein drink in the hospital and had to drink at least 1/2 of it, to be eligible for release. They don't want to send you home to starve.

There are plenty of Protein drinks that are the consistence of Water, like Syntrax nectar.

See another doctor. ASAP

Was this the surgeon in Mexico?.

Could there be a language barrier problem?

I hope you re-establish locally as soon as you can.

I hope the rest of your journey is a joyful one despite this bump in the road.

^^This protocol is similar to mine- clear liquids, full liquid, then soft foods.

Having no Protein is insane. You will just burn up muscle the whole time. I'd find another doctor asap.

Yes. I obtained a new doctor and NUT and am starting the full liquid stage today and am on protein! Yay!!! At the grocery store shopping now. They both agreed that 5 weeks of no Protein is dangerous! Thanks for thinking of me!!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
