My surgeon says no protein supplements until week 5. Does this sound right to you?

Recommended Posts

@@SilentBotts This is my plan requirement as well - I will be getting Protein shakes (Bariatric Fusion) in the hospital and I'm to continue them through week 6 (at least). @@sleeverv I don't know if your plan is different due to the low BMI - but I can't imagine that it would be. I wouldn't go too long without Protein. Is it possible there's a communication barrier with the instructions you received?

Kristenle, no there was not a communication barrier. She responded to my email stating The reason why I'm not supposed to drink Protein until week five and this is what she said:

it is to prevent leakage because of the consistency of Protein.< /p>

I actually have my surgery file. And I found a place where I can go in the states. I'm going to support group tomorrow with them. I actually started drinking Protein today at the advice of the new nutritionist. I had to do what was best for me.

You're very welcome.

That's what BP is all about--supporting one another.

@@sleeverv That is good! No Protein drinks for 5 weeks is dangerous.

I have been on here 2 1/2 years and have never heard of this approach. My own surgeon developed the bariatric program for the Cleveland Clinic and is now the head of the bariatric clinic at Loyola University Medical Center where I got sleeved. He teaches gastro-intestinal, bariatric and robotic surgery. He had me on 60 grams of Protein from day one.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
