My surgeon says no protein supplements until week 5. Does this sound right to you?

Right, wrong or indifferent, all surgeons have their own idea of what's best. Yours does go against the norm and excellence or not, I think you are right to question her plan. Having been through a Protein rich recovery and doing really well, I know I would. Unless you are planning to travel back and forth to Mexico, you need a surgeon closer to home to work with you post-op anyway. Personally I would consult with that one.

My surgery was done at a Center of Excellence. I was drinking Protein shakes the day after surgery (they wouldnt let me leave the hospital otherwise) and sent home on a full liquid diet which included 3 Protein Shakes a day, along with yogurt, pudding, Jello, cream Soups, Water, crystal light, sf popsicles. That was the first 2 weeks post op, then on to puree for weeks 3 & 4, then ground meats for weeks 4 through 7, then cleared for all foods. It has all been pretty easy overall and has worked a charm for me. Just bought a pair of size 6 denim shorts today. And they fit :)

Good luck!!

Edit: I want to add that how you feel is really the most telling thing. If Protein shakes make you feel better, then you should have protein shakes. My .02 but I think it's as important as like.. .05 :) You don't want to feel weak when your body needs strength to repair itself.

Yes that's what I'm in the process of doing, finding a local surgeon. I asked my medical carrier to put in the referral to one today. That's the plan that I will ultimately go on. Your plan sounds excellent! Wish that was mine! Hopefully my new plan will be similar to yours. Sounds more doable. Thanks for the comment.

You're welcome! I think my bariatric team and center and plan really have been excellent. I have had zero problems *knock on wood* (I don't want to jinx myself. LOL) and great results. You could share that plan with your nutritionist and see if she's good with it. But again all centers have their own idea of what's best.

No I'm not going to share this plan with her, I'm just going to find another one locally which I'm sure will have a more doable plan!

I was sleeved on May 18th my doctor didn't want me to do Protein until my one week visit. Last Wednesday I was getting nausea a lot with Constipation so Thursday my Dr took me off the Protein shakes for another week. He said protein was important but with all the supplements plus Water it's better to add the protein once I'm able to eat vegetables and fruits so he will be including those in when I see him this Thursday. It seems to me it's case by case so follow your doctors order and ask why can't you have protein, maybe there's a reason have a good day.

I'm 4 days post op and my surgeon requires I do a 2 week clear liquid diet, 2 week full liquid diet and then add Protein supplements at week five. This just does not sound right to me. What did your NUT require? Thanks.

That seems a little strange. I had to drink a small serving of Protein shake to get discharged from the hospital. They did tell me not to worry about hitting my Protein goal at first, but I was drinking protein shakes my second day home.

@@SilentBotts This is my plan requirement as well - I will be getting Protein shakes (Bariatric Fusion) in the hospital and I'm to continue them through week 6 (at least). @@sleeverv I don't know if your plan is different due to the low BMI - but I can't imagine that it would be. I wouldn't go too long without Protein. Is it possible there's a communication barrier with the instructions you received?

I'm not sure but I just spoke to the hospital here in San Diego who told me to start drinking 30 grams a day immediately. I sent a message to the surgeon office yesterday but haven't heard anything yet. B

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!
