Should I drive or fly when it's time to go home and how long should I stay at the hotel after hospital?

Recommended Posts

I'm in SC and am having the sleeve surgery in NC on July 21.

I'm staying one night in the hospital following surgery. How many days do you think I should stay in the hotel before my trip back home? I'd rather recover at home than in a hotel.

It's a 3-3 1/2 drive or an hour flight (I would pick a non-stop flight).

Based on your experiences, which mode of transportation would you recommend?

Thanks!

Would you be driving yourself? If so, definitely fly. Probably not even safe for most post-op people to be driving at all, let alone that long, so soon after surgery. Especially keep in mind that you need to be free from narcotic painkillers for 24 hours before driving.

If someone is driving you, I would vote for the car. Remember that you'll need to stop every hour and get out and walk for several minutes to help prevent blood clots.

If you are flying on your own, remember your lifting restrictions -- if you are using an overhead, you'll need assistance getting your bag into and out of the bin, as well as possibly carrying it in the airport.

My vote is for one night in the hotel.

Good luck to you!

Sorry. I meant to include that my husband and 5 year old son will be with me and if we drive, my husband will be doing the driving.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
