Summer Reading

Recommended Posts

are there any other people here who just love to get lost in a good book? What are you reading this summer? my best loves are historic fiction and biographies, but I also like books that make me laugh - and I think my summer reading list will focus on the latter, especially when I go on vacation.

Historic fiction? Are we talking about a good Julie Garwood??? My all time favorite!

my favorite historic fiction writer is Eugenia Price - the Savannah series has made me long to go on vacation there for my whole adult life. one of these days I will make it.

I will also admit to liking Elizabeth Chadwick's novels, although they can't really be called historic fiction, more like fiction set in history. :P they are fun what if's that flesh out historic people. same with Phillipa Gregory. certainly fiction, but an an enjoyable romp through a historic setting. I also like Jane Austen and the like.

Yes, I'm on Goodreads and read a lot! My primary reading areas are "literary" fiction (hate the term but it's useful), history, nonfiction current events/social issues, popular books on science and medicine (i.e., stuff written for non-scientists), psychological thrillers, and memoirs. I also read a fair amount of historical fiction, "women's" fiction, and light fantasy/sci fi/dystopian fiction.

Right now I'm listening to two audiobooks -- I Am Malala by Malala Yousufzai and Slade House by David Mitchell. Both are excellent! Slade House is horror, which is not usually on my reading menu, but I really love it.

I just finished reading The Good Soldiers, which is nonfiction following a regiment in Iraq.

And I have a library book waiting for me for my next read: Louise Erdrich's new novel, LaRose.

I'm always looking for a good book. I'm re-reading Harry Potter just because I couldn't find anything else really good. Now I gotta see it through to the end.

Hopefully I'll get some good recommendations from this thread!

@@Blue1213 one of my favorite books this year was Rainbow Rowell's Carry On -- if you haven't read it, check it out! It's very purposely built on a Potter-like universe with Potter-like main characters, and it's really wonderful. Rowell is a terrific writer.

I love current autobiographies and true crime. Fascinating stuff. I also love a great trashy novel. Life is too serious sometimes and it's great to just sink into a good book that is mindless.

I used to be a huge Stephen King fan and would read all his books the moment they came out but kids came along and I fell behind. I am two in and plan on being all caught up by summer's end.

I love to read.

I am participating in a 2016 reading challenge and have a few books in progress for that: Ulysses (which I intend to read every year), a book of poetry, and the prequel to Anne of Green Gables.

I am also trying to write a historical novel so am doing lots of research that includes reading through a stack of books (mostly about the US Civil War).

More later...

Yes, I love reading and have some great recommendations. I enjoy historic fiction, literary fiction, and an occasional YA book. Here are a few of my favorite books of all time: Life of Pi, by Yann Martel; Echo, by Pam Munoz Ryan; The Shadow of the Wind, by Carlos Ruiz Zafon; In the Garden of Beasts, by Erik Larson; and Let the Great World Spin, by Colum McCann. None of those will really make you laugh though, more likely to make you cry, so they may not be what you're looking for this summer. Echo might be the best summer option, but I highly recommend listening to the audiobook. Music is a huge part of the story, and it's incorporated beautifully into the audio version. It adds an entirely new level of feeling and emotion to the story.

For a good "romp" and great belly laughs, try Julie Garwood's "Pirate" series. They are great for escapism and come along with a good dose of that "tingling" sensation.

All in the good and "proper" pre-Victorian era.

Great, mindless summer time read---or as my daughter says, "warm weather women's porn".

At my age, I'll enjoy every "tingle" I can get. :)

My favorite book series are Harry Potter and Outlander. But I love any kind of book that I can get lost in. I read two books last week: Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty (so good! and soon to be an HBO miniseries!) and I Do It With the Lights On by Whitney Way Thore. I'm a big fan of memoirs these days.

I am back.

I also read "pool books": usually cheap paperbacks I don't mind getting wet in the pool. I just finished Ann Rule's Dead by Sunset. It was really good if you like true crime.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
