Being denied due to weight gain...

Recommended Posts

Has this happened to anyone?

I still have 3 months (October) until I will be done with my supervised diet. However, when I had my last visit I had gained 3 pounds. My Nut made me scared and told me that if I keep gaining, they'd deny my surgery.

That of course terrified me. My reason for getting this surgery is because no matter how hard I try, I cannot lose more than 10-15 pounds before gaining them all back. I have been like this my whole life. It's gotten to the point where even my PCP thinks this is the best route for me.

I cannot afford to not be able to have this surgery.

Now before someone tells me what to do to help lose... I've literally tried everything.

-I've cut out all sodas.

-no sugary foods

-limited carb intake.

-weight watchers

-slim 4 life.

-etc.

Idk what to do. I'm scared. And just stressing over stuff I may not be able to control.

Don't stress,my hat only makes it worse. Try focusing on eating Protein and veggies ONLY for awhile. It will get you through the carb craving phase and should jump start the weight loss. Eat eggs, cottage cheese, cheese sticks, chicken, turkey, lean red meats, Beans, carrots, green beans, broccoli, cauliflower, low fat Greek yogurt... Do you have a mandatory weight loss amount before surgery?

No I do not. And that's what made me nervous about what was said. I was nerve told a weight that I had to be, and hearing that threw me for a complelte loop. Of course I dont want to gain to make it easier with surgery, but geez...

And When I do decide to eat carbs it's very VERY little (if at all).

What helped me was drinking Protein shakes for Breakfast vs eating food (healthy or not) and that lowered my calories and boosted my Protein. It was one small change that really helped me mid way in my 6 mo supervised diet phase.

Maybe I'll try that. When I told her that I drank Protein Shakes she freaked, and told me that they're full of sugar. Any brands you recommend? I'm just hoping that this won't stop me from having the surgery. The last thing I need is to be too fat to get help...

Sounds like your NUT doesn't really know what she is talking about. I would call the person that does the insurance submissions and ask them about the gain/loss weight requirement. AND you will have to have Protein shakes post-op, so if she doesn't like them now, I wonder what she will recommend post-op. Try the Premier Protein ready to drink shakes. Great Protein and very low sugar. For a powder, check out Precision Engineered whey Protein Isolate. I have had great success with it and really like the taste (also very low sugar). The vanilla even smells heavenly. Lastly are you writing down all your food in a log somewhere (ie MyFitnessPal or LoseIt or Livestrong/MyDailyPlate? You will need to do this post-op, so it is a great habit to get in now to see how many calories, protein, fat and carbs you are really getting. What you think may be "very little carbs" may in fact not be.

My insurance doesn't require a specific amount of weight loss but they do say no net gain. So, I can't go over what my initial weight was. Maybe this is what your NUT is thinking about too.

If it were me in this situation I would get in writing the requirements of the results from your preop diet from both insurance and surgeon. Sounds like the NUT might be playing mind game here and that is disrespectful. Please find out the rules from the insurance company AND the surgeon.

I do use my fitness pal. I have for about a year now. And Protein Shakes actually aren't recommended much in my program. Powder yes. But shakes no. I also get started on clear purees the day of, and regular purees by day three. It's weird. But the best, nationally known Bariatric hospital around me. I have confidence in it.

Sorry I don't understand the difference between "shakes" and "powder". "Shakes" are essentially "powder" with milk or Water added.....

shakes are pre made and you can open and drink... powder is Protein based which can be made into a shake or added to food items I guess depending on the taste... Powder can be a shake but pre made shake can't be a powder lol

First of all, don't stress. Stress raises your cortisol level which then makes more weight pile on. Stay calm. Most programs have a no net gain policy so if you gain 3lbs you gotta lose those 3 lbs to qualify. They just want to see that you can lose weight and maintain it. I too had trouble losing weight pre op. I would lose 10-15lbs and then like them back on without changing a thing. It was frustrating! I kept upping my exercise and Water to make it through mine each time I'd gain 1lb, I'd add 5 more minutes of walking or 15 more sit-ups or whatever just to get through. In the end, I did lose quite a bit of weight before the actual surgery, but it was a fight to keep it off. Now that I'm on the other side, I haven't had those problems anymore and my weightloss has been just amazing! My recommendation is to try to do a low carb high Protein diet with lots and lots and I can't say it enough lots of water! It will prepare you for life after surgery and help with the weight gain.

I didn't have a weight amount that I had to lose, but I couldn't have a net gain. In the 4 months before surgery I didn't gain, but I didn't really lose either. Surgery day I was down 7 pounds, but I'm sure most of that was the cleanse I dId the day before. :) FOr my surgeon it was about putting into practice the habits I would need to maintain my pouch after surgery, i.e. eating more Protein, not drinking for 30 minutes on either side of food, quitting pop, exercising and eating slowly. I put those in place even if I was not losing. Part of it was showing my dedication to the changes, even if the scale wasn't reacting correctly.

You can do it. You have time to make the changes necessary.

I'm still pre-op and having surgery next week. I've actually been put on a liquid diet for the two weeks prior to surgery. Now I wouldn't suggest doing a full liquid diet because it would be hard to maintain, but I agree with the person that said to sub a Protein shake for Breakfast. I drink a premier Protein Shake for breakfast and lunch and it's a great kick start for weight loss. And, like everyone else said, don't stress!!! They are likely just trying to put a little fear into you too. My nutritionist did the same thing and everything worked out fine

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
