New on bariatricpal start program this wed

Recommended Posts

Im new on this forum/app and I have millions of questions that will probably be answered during my pre program but I have one question to ask

For the gastric bypass you will have a drain tube right? And if so has anyone heard how long after the surgery you have to use it and how painful is it?

Thanks

Welcome!

I had my bypass last August, and I did have a drainage tube, though I have seen many bypassers that didn't need them, so it could really go either way depending on your surgeon, your health, etc. From what I experienced, the drain was annoying and a little unsettling to me, mostly because I have a lot of anxiety to begin with and I always feared it would get snagged on something and hurt terribly/be ripped out of me or something else that would have been horrible. However, it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be, and I only had it in for about a week after surgery. It didn't hurt when they pulled it out, but it was the most bizarre sensation I have ever felt in my life. Life a GIANT piece of spaghetti forcefully being sucked out of your insides by a giant mouth. It almost tickled! And then it was over and gone. :) It may be a little cumbersome, but it won't last long and shouldn't hurt at all. Good luck!

I was told that I will have it during surgery, and then it would be removed before I go home.

I had two when I had breast reduction surgery years ago. They didn't hurt but were in the way most of the time. Taking them out was a breeze. Like @@Cervidae says...it almost tickles a little. No need at all to worry about drains!

I had RNY 3 weeks ago and my doctor had my drain tube removed in the hospital just before I went home. Like the others say, it doesn't hurt being removed, but boy does it feel weird!

All doctors are different. Ask yours how long/if they use one :)

I feel good. Pain is tolerable, no need for pain meds now. No nausea. Getting the Protein and fluids in is really a full time job. But that's what this time off work is for: to let my body heal and figure out the rhythm of this new way of nutrition. I set my phone timer for every 15 minutes, get up and walk and drink. So far, so good.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
