Hello everyone,

I have recently started my 6 month weight management to qualify for weight loss surgery, but I have been a bit discouraged. I have been turned down by three surgeons because of a previous pancreatic surgery in 2007. I guess my question is if someone out there has gone through something similar and can share there journey and experiences with me.

Thanks in advance,

Gaby

are you self funded, or going through insurance? Have they given you any reasons why they're not interested in proceeding? Is there scar tissue or something like that?

Hi Duckydoom!

I currently have Arizona AHCCCS, and the reason I keep getting is that I am vary high risk due to my previous surgery. Yeas there is probably a lot of tissue scaring due to the fact that the scare is in down the middle of my stomach, from under my breast line to my belly button. And to mention that the cut was used twice ( had my gallbladder removed and a cyst on my pancreas drained in March 2007, and then in October 2007 had 80% of my pancreas removed, a piece of my stomach, and a piece of my colon, and they used the cut from the first surgery for the second surgery)

@@Gaby86 hmmm... so they must be worried about internal scarring as well, that's the only thing as a non medical professional that I can think of. :( Have they done scans or indicated if there is any way that they can determine how much tissue is there? Are they just worried about the wounds not closing up? When I had my lap band removed, they just went through the original large cut, and he made another small incision as well. From what I understand they don't need to make giant cuts to do the sleeve under normal circumstances. Have they told you if they were willing do the surgery that they would have to completely open you up again?

Sorry I have more questions than answers. Were all of the surgeons at the same practice, or are they at different locations?

@@duckydoom,

I had both surgeries done in Charlotte, North Carolina, and as of right now I have not had any test/labs done. I just began the process to qualify for weight loss surgery. I began to do my research and called various bariatric surgeons offices, but 2 out 3 denied me without reviewing my case. The surgeon in the town I live in asked for my records and reviewed them. Her team advised me to look for a university hospital that would have top surgeons and specialist if needed. I contact the Banner University Hospital in Phoenix, and was told that I would have to attend a seminar, and schedule a consultation so the surgeon can review my case and go from there.

@@Gaby86 well, shoot. It is pretty ridiculous that they denied you without even reviewing anything. The seminar sounds pretty standard, thats what I had to do, about 2 hours out of my day. I hope it all works out for you!

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
