GERD, Acid Issues Post OP

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

I am two weeks post-op and generally kicking buttock. I have been back at work for a week and have lost 37 pounds since starting pre-op diet one month ago-so that's awesome! My biggest issues are lack of energy and acid reflux. I'll deal with the energy, I know it will come back once i settle in a bit more and can start getting in a few more calories (only at about 450-500 currently).

BUT, the GERD SUCKS!!!! I get little bile eruptions of acid in my throat for no reason, just sitting at my desk or whatever. I wake up with it and it plagues me all day! From the moment I woke up in the recovery room I've suffered miserably from this. I am taking 40mg of Nexium currently but still suffering. Never had a stitch of an issue pre-op! If I'd have known this would happen, I'd have chosen RNY.

Anyone else? Did you find relief? Any Suggestions?

Thanks!

What are you taking for it? I was on 40 mg of omeprazole (sp?) for the first several weeks after surgery, 20 mg in the morning and 20 mg at night. If your PPI isn't doing enough (and it sounds like it isn't), check in with your doc to increase your prescription or try a stronger drug. Good luck!

I would agree that you should try and switch to a different PPI or adjust your dose. I'm 2 years post sleeve and developed horrible GERD that is not controlled by medication. I'm on Protonix (40mg) before Breakfast, Dexilant (60mg) before dinner, Carafate (before Breakfast, lunch and dinner and bedtime), and zantac (before bed) and it doesn't control my symptoms. I also have acid/bile rise into my throat and wake up choking on acid numerous times a week. I'm currently waiting for approval to revise to bypass which I'm promised will eliminate my GERD. Definitely try different medications/combinations. Hope you find something that works for you and that you get some relief!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
