I read somewhere on here, not sure where, that you have to give up coffee prior to surgery. I'm wondering the reason? Is this forever? or just initially? Is it the caffeine? the acidity? both?

Honestly, I will give up just about anything for this, even though I know this one will be hard for me. I'm just wondering the reasons. Thanks!

This is a touchy subject (too). Some believe that coffee (or caffeine actually) should not be consumed post-op. This can be from a few reasons - one being that some believe it can cause ulcers (it probably can). Also - I was told by my NUT that it can also interfere with Calcium and Vitamin absorption. Immediately post-op it could cause dehydration issues as well. Many have resumed coffee drinking post-op - others have given it up completely. If you drink a lot of coffee - I would recommend giving it up (or reducing heavily) pre-op so that you aren't dealing with caffeine withdrawal along with all the other fun stuff happening post-op.

I think most doctors do it because the acidity is tough on the healing, tiny stomach. Don't let anyone tell you it has to do with dehydration, that's a myth (at least for people who are used to coffee, it doesn't have any sort of a dehydrating effect). I think it can also be a big source of liquid calories (terrible idea) unless you drink it black.

It is hard, ngl! I went three months post-op without coffee and then reintegrated it back into my diet. I always drink my coffee black so it doesn't harm my calorie or carb counts for the day. I drink more black coffee than anything else -- I rarely drink just plain Water -- and I am happy and healthy and hydrated :D

It depends on your program. My program allows Decaf coffee and tea, but not regular. There is a person in my program who firmly believes his stomal ulcers were caused by his going back to regular coffee. You will hear from others where their program allows it. Ask your doctor and follow his/her advice.

I had to give up coffee for 30 days post-op, due to the acid being so harsh on my healing stomach. I actually gave it up at the start of my pre-op diet just so i wouldn't be going through withdrawal post-op.

My biggest concern would be caffeine leaching Calcium from your bones.

I gave it up briefly during my initial post op timeframe.

Then......during a post-op follow up appointment I asked my surgeon if, when and how I could have coffee.

He smiled and said, "Sure, I have two cups a day why can't you?".

I had man-love for that dude at that moment (no homo). Seriously....I damn near broke his hand when we shook hands.

coffee and have been friends for a long, long time.......and will remain so.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
