I am in the process of getting the gastric sleeve. I was told I had to lose 40lbs before they would do the surgery. They gave me a diet to follow but it was super unhealthy (lol like I know better lol). I do a lot of research and the low-fat high-carb diet seems bad for you. My nutritionist wanted me to drink diet shakes and eat lean cuisines. I have been eating eggs, bacon, cheese, chicken, steak and salads. I almost lost all the weight they wanted me to lose in 3 to 4 months I did it in less than a month.
I have realised I have an addiction to sugar. If I don't eat it the cravings go away but if I do eat it I can not stop until I am miserable. I have 5 boys ages from 11 years down to 8 months. I want to be healthy and I do not want to be fat!!!

Great job! If I could do lchf and lose that much I wouldn't get the surgery. I've tried everything, even paleo. I've even done a juicing reset. Nothing works.

Low carb diets are highly effective in weight loss.

I mean, you can't go through it overloading on cheese and other stuff that will raise your calorie intake above the amount you burn every day.

It does keep hunger at bay and eliminates carb cravings and will allow you to remain in a calorie deficit in a much more agreeable way.

I followed my nutritionists diet plan prior to surgery. Oddly, it was not a diet that I would be following later on when post-op. Lots of grains and such....the opposite of my way of eating now. The weight loss was okay, however, I was freaking hungry the whole time.

I transitioned over to low carb 1,500 calories per day and the hunger went away and the weight loss kicked into gear.

I was visiting with my parents and sister last weekend and they were trying to plan restaurant trips and cooking menus....I urged them to relax....it was all good as I could eat in any restaurant and be just fine. I told them in simple terms that my way of eating is equivalent to ordering a meaty entree and just leaving the side dishes alone. They understood. Once they saw how simple it was they started talking about doing the same. My dad seemed really enthused about adopting the low carb way of eating, too.

You are doing great as you approach your surgery date. You will be grateful for every pound you lose now, too. I can't understand why some folks want to wait until they are post op to lose weight. The goal is to lose....not wait to lose. You are going to do great. You've already made the mental changes necessary.

Low carb is amazingly effective.

When I entered my bariatric program, I decided to completely overhaul the way I eat. I figured I am going to have to change how I eat after surgery (almost all protein) so I might as well get used to it and make it a habit while I can still afford to slip up and cheat occasionally (which I did). I eliminated sugar from my diet, as well as pretty much all simple carbs like white bread, Pasta, and rice. I also didn't shy away from fat. I ate tons of cheese, and used real butter and cream in my cooking. Because the meals were so filling, I ended up eating less, whereas with carby meals I could eat a ton, then be hungry again in an hour and ready for more (or dessert). The carb cravings were horrible for a while, but they went away. When I did slip though, they came right back, so I learned it's better to just stay away. Personally, I can't do carbs in moderation. If I have some, I will want more and the cravings will intensify.

In the 7ish months it took to fulfill all the requirements to get my sleeve, I ended up losing 110 lbs!

I seriously considered not having surgery, but I have a LOT of weight to lose, and maintaining is another beast altogether. Also, while I was eating less (and much healthier), I was still eating way more than I should have been. I would just fill up on salad or veggies. Much healthier, but my years of overeating meant that I was still eating 2-3 times a normal serving size.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
