6 days out & increasing pain on my left side

Recommended Posts

I have terrible pain on my left side also. I am 6 days post op, and it burns terribly on the left incision. Does the heating pad help? Any other tips? Thanks in advance!

I'm 12 days post op and the pain on my left is horrible. Went to the er yesterday just to make sure it wasn't anything serious and ct scan was ok.

Heating pad, ice helps. I switch back and forth. I also switched from my bed to chair.

I'm 29 days out and still have the pain. I can't bend over all the way, have trouble putting on my left shoe, and laying down in bed can still be tricky. I'm going to ask my Dr is pain this bad should happen this far out.

I'm glad to say that the pain completely subsided at exactly 1 month out from surgery! I had a strange dream about something coming out of my largest incision. Then I woke up & have been pain free (at least in that location-my back is still killing me) ever since. It's kind of crazy how it completely stopped. I can bend over, tie both shoes, lay down & even cross my legs to put on socks with no pain. Hope you all get there soon too.

That is awesome news!!! I'm so very happy for you!! My back hurts too on the left side!! Is it from sitting or is that from surgery too? I can't wait til I can bend over and not have to hold my stomach when I walk!! ????

I just read this post and have to ask what did they do with you when you had cdiff? Did you go home with family there or your alone? This is a big worry for me...

Had RNY Gastric Bypass last Monday (6 days ago). Everything went great! Went home the following day. Following instructions to the T. But yesterday my pain started increasing especially on my left side. I really hoped I would feel improvement by now but it's actually worse. Dr hasn't been available all weekend of course but went to urgent care last night (which was pointless as the Dr had no clue anything about WLS patients). The nurse told me to go due to the puss that developed under the glue on the incision site but they said its not infected.

Anyway, the pain on my left side is constant and kind of feels like when you drink too much then exercise and get those cramps. But when I walk it's even worse. And there's a burning sensation on my lower abdomen (nowhere near incision site). Just wondering if anyone else experienced this? Is it normal? Also having regular diarrhea (sorry tmi) and Dr said it was normal a few days ago but most people are constipated. I sure hope this gets easier soon. I can't even put my socks & shoes on by myself. Lol. I'm hopeful but just so shocked at how bad things still are.

I'm 3 weeks post op, and have the same pain, but on my right side! Bending over is excruciating! I can't stretch, reach, kneel, anything without that incessant pain. And the burning! I literally clutch my stomach/side when I feel it. Idk what it is- but it's a relief to know I'm not the only one experiencing it. I emailed my surgeon, I'm hoping he gets back to me soon, because I'm due to go back to work next Monday- and idk how I'm going to do it with this pain!

cat.jackson89-

I also have pain on my right side, not the left like everyone else.

Did they ever tell you what it was? I had surgery 6/13 and I really thought it would be gone by now. It's very annoying!

Ladies with the pain on the right, what surgery did you have? Is there a big incision on the right? Most of the work they did was on the left. Which is why the biggest incision is there. The pain was mostly from the nerve endings.

The back pain is mostly causes from when we over compensate for the pain in the front. We tend to bend forward when in pain so it puts stress on our backs. But I also had back problems pre op. Mostly my back is doing better b/c I'm working out so much.

CDiff- no one told me anything about this. I kept telling my surgeon I had diarrhea and he kept saying its normal. But everyone else was constipated. Finally he asked how many times. I was having it like 6-8 times daily so he ran tests. Found CDiff. I thought it was gone after the first round of antibiotics but I started having diarrhea frequently again. So 1.5 weeks ago they ran more tests & I still had CDiff. I'm on vancomycin and that stuff kicked cdiff's butt! I could tell within 4 days as I got my energy back & no diarrhea. In fact, my Iron was low so they put me on Iron which makes you constipated so I now have to take Colace & Dulcolax every night.

If you have diarrhea more than 3x per day you need to tell them. Post op 3x daily can be normal but if more than that push to get tested.

Oh and of course weight loss has slowed since it cleared up. Lol.

Hi girl4god77,

I had my lap band removed and converted to a RNY on 6/13. My two largest incisions are above my belly button, and on the right side. It hurts when I bend over, and just in general basically aches a lot of the time (like right now!). My surgeon did say my surgery was difficult and there was a lot of scar tissue. I am just ready for the pain to be over, and I am so afraid it will always be there.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
