Hello all...you've got another newbie here. I have been prepping for BPD/DS for the last 6 months and now that I'm closers to scheduling surgury I'm so nervous and have even scheduled an appointment with my Doc to discuss in detail my apprehensions. I thought I'd throw some of them out there. I've been lurking reading others posts and one of the things that has made me nervous are talks of infusions, hematologists, tons of supplements and, horrible smelling bms that peels paint off the walls. Okay yes the poop thing is minor but peeling paint...that makes this girl nervous. I don't want to be the office social pariah. In all seriousness are infusions and hematologists worst case scenarios? I don't want to trade one serious health issue for another. Also what are people spending on Vitamins and supplements? Sounds like a fortune and I am using every penny I have for surgury.

Thanks in advance and from what I have read there are some pretty awesome people here so I feel welcome already.

Thanks,

Chandra

What surgery are you wanting to have. I have the VSG and I have never experienced any of that. What post are you reading?! I'm missing out apparently.

I can't comment on your specific surgery, I had RNY, however I can tell you that the money spent on supplements is far cheaper than what I was spending on groceries and eating out every month. My wife, who has not had any surgery, and I spend half what we used to on food including the Vitamin cost. We were spending probably over $100-150 a week eating out and groceries and now we spend maybe $200-300 a month. As to your question about the possibility of complications these are present with any surgery. These should be discussed with your surgeon and you should feel comfortable with everything before you proceed with anything. Good luck!

I had RNY 3 years ago. Before surgery I took four prescription drugs to control my diabetes and high blood pressure. Within 2 weeks after surgery, I stopped taking all these medications because I no longer needed them. So the cost of my Vitamins is essentially offset by the cost of not having to take these prescription medicines.

talks of infusions, hematologists, tons of supplements and, horrible smelling bms that peels paint off the walls.

Not sure what you mean by infusions?

Hematologist - After surgery about once per year I have full blood work done. It's a pain but the results fine tweak my Vitamin requirements. When I dropped back on my Calcium tablets, my blood work caught that change. It also uncovered the fact that I was low on Iron.

Tons of supplements - I took supplements before surgery. Now I just take a few more.

Horrible smelling BMs (bowel movements). - after surgery I had to deal with bouts of diarrhea and Constipation and learn ways to correct that. Also my breath and body odor has changed somewhat for the worse.

DS is well known for causing strong smelling BMs and requiring alot of Vitamins. If this is the right surgery for you, I think you should talk to others who have had it about it. There is a very active DS forum on obesity help.

There is a product called poo pouri that is supposed to work miracles at reducing the smell.

don't be scared of Vitamins, that becomes routine over time.

It's normal to be absolutely terrified of bariatric surgery and I think it is probably ok - it means you are taking this seriously!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
