Newbe to gastric bypass world

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, I've already went through the process of being qualified for gastric sleeve surgery. Unfortunately I broke my humerus near my shoulder, so now it has delayed me in getting my surgery. My question is, I planning on scheduling my pre-op some time in June. So what should I do before hand to prepare myself for a new healthy way of life for myself? I'm some what overwhelmed, not sure what to buy, if I should get my body ready for weeks of liquid diet right now , or wait ? When should I start a journal ? What's the best Protein powder on the market ?

Oh man, I had a break like that a dozen years ago. I hope it isn't your dominant arm. Heal well!

About five months before surgery, I just started out tracking my intake. I use Sparkpeople, some folks prefer Myfitnesspal. My intention was accountability, not weight loss. I also started weighing daily because during parts of my life where I'd been more successful, that was a practice that worked for me.

I'd already decaffeinated years ago. Some people use this time to ease off carbonated drinks, caffeine, or trigger foods. It's an excellent time in your life to take a good look inside, and explore whether you're an emotional eater (I wasn't). If you are, start now to develop some self-care techniques so that when emotions come up and you can't use food to soothe yourself, you can still cope.

Other people use this time to start moving and changing other habits that get in the way of postop success.

This can be a really fruitful time in your life.

Oh, and remember that if you're healing a fracture, you actually need a bit more Protein and calories for healing.

Thank you 2goldengirl for the reply back. Unfortunately yes it was my dominant arm. But it's getting better through physical therapy. Thank you so much for your advice, I'm going to start looking into high Protein shacks and start getting my body use to it. And drinking Water.

Hi! I'm 2 weeks post op. I know before surgery I was so afraid of what pain I might be feeling. I know everyone is different but I was walking the day after surgery.

2goldengirl said it well! Also just would like to add whatever weight you can lose now gets you that much closer to your goal weight! Hope you heal well and good luck on your journey!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
