Young and in the first steps

I've been looking into weight loss surgery for a few years unfortunately my in network surgeons you have to be 18. No I don't want any negative comments about adolescents getting WLS. I'm currently almost 18 and my surgeon has agreed to start the process even though my surgery will not be until after I am 18. I'm going out of state for college and I would of loved to have become healthy before school started but now I am looking around December for my surgery date. I guess any tips, any encouraging words, and even better I just wanna hear everyone's stories! Anyone else braving the holiday season with a new surgery?

Welcome.

I was sleeved April 20, 2015 and couldn't be happier with my experience, my surgeon, my recovery, and my progress so far. I am getting my life back.

You posted this in the bypass forum. Have you already decided on bypass or is this just the only procedure you know about? I ask because a lot has changed in the last few years and you may want to explore all your options,

Best of luck with your surgery and keep us posted on how you are doing,

Hi! I did speak to a different surgeon who agreed that Bypass is the best choice for me. It is the one I know most about.

I just want to wish you good luck. I have been heavy all of my life and I would've jumped at the opportunity to have WLS at 18. I think having it this early will be great because you will learn your new healthy habits that will carry you into adulthood. It will definitely make your 20s much easier :) Again, good luck to you!

You are a good age to get surgery so you can take charge while you are young.Kudos to you.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
