It really bugs me that some surgeons say you should not use it. sleep apneas are not to be played with, especially post-op...

My guess is that they think it might cause you to swallow a lot of air since it's "forcing" air into you. But it seems absurd since it's used for breathing, and like most of us here, I was told I absolutely had to bring it with me to the hospital, although they never made me use it while there. Considering your body is already stressed out enough from surgery, it doesn't make sense to deprive it of oxygen every time you sleep.

Wow any surgery I have ever had made me bring cpap to the hospital. They wouldn't do mine either without it. Interesting!!!

You have increased risk of pulmonary compromise postoperative when you have sleep apnea. The pulmonologist went over this with me pre sleep study. My surgeon told me they didn't want an undetected sleep apnea to not be treated and cause complications post op. At the very least I would ask their reasonsing. And then promptly check with your pulmonary physician. Surgeons operate and that is their expertise. Check what they give as reasoning with the physician who manages your Cpap- pulmonary.

Wow my doc told me it was mandatory to bring it to the hospital or I would not get my surgery. I don't think you should be off of it if you have bad sleep apnea.....

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
