Getting ready for surgery need your inputs...

Recommended Posts

My surgery is May 13, i know it's still far away but I am starting get ready because my schedule is so busy and would like to stock op on few things I will need after surgery at home. Could you please share what was useful to have in the hospital and at home first couple of weeks after surgery, food wise, Protein wise, for comfort heating pads or anything else.

Also question, I've read somewhere that after bypass you are not allowed to drink through a straw or chew gum... Is this true? If so why is that? I don't mean initially after surgery, it actually talked about ever...

Thanks everyone!

I am 3 weeks post lap band revised to gastric. I have lost 20 pounds and have had no problems. No gum , No straw. The gum draws air into your system as does the straw. The straw also makes a person drink too fast. You will want to have plenty of liquid foods ie: Jello, chicken broth, 1% milk, powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury.com has mixes to put in Water. (I'm drinking an apple one in 20 oz of Water right now which is giving me 21 g of Protein. My doctor told me to remember 60/60/60. 60 gr Protein, 60 oz water, and 60 mi of walking per day. The walking can be done in 10 minute increments. You are not going to feel like eating a thing and they really don't expect you too. Just try very hard to get water in so you don't dehydrate. Believe me..time will go by fast. It's really not that bad:) Good luck to ya

Thank you for the feedback!

I checked unjury.com but didn't see Water flavors, where is it?

Btw, I was reading hospital paperwork, it said I won't have any Water or ice until I have upper GI and it everything shows ok I will start liquid diet. Have you all had upper GI the day after surgery and how did it go? I would think this would be really uncomfortable and painful maybe since everything is so fresh...

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
