Hello from Central Florida

Recommended Posts

My surgery is scheduled for April 14. I felt great leading up to this. But as soon as so got the date, I started having doubts. I've heard from many people that I'm not heavy enough for surgery. But my stats would disagree 5'9 270. But I also weight train. Even my cardiologist asked if I was completely sure that I wanted to do this, because of my general muscle tone. I carry most of my weight in my massive mid section. I'm all belly. Have any guys in my forum been at my weight and height range and had the surgery. I also have HBP, and sleep apnea. Over the years my weight has shot up to 300, and got as low as 225.

My husband is into fitness and if u have a belly your over weight...muscle mass in arms, legs etc does not count...cause the problems are all in the belly area..your HBP and sleep apnea is proof there...i struggled to do it too cause im petite but like u my health conditions showed i needed it...2 weeks out most of my problems are gone!

Erik, I don't know your age, (I'm 55), but I know where you're coming from. Although I do weigh 400, my healthy weight (muscle mass/fat percentage) is around 250 to 270. Oh I forgot I'm 5'9 as well. Obviously I need surgery, but as far as yourself, I can see the concern. When u say belly, are you talking fat? I'm guessing u are. As far as eating habits, do u eat clean? Alcohol use? I know what the charts say, we shouldn't weigh over 183, I believe. As far as BMI, you know it doesn't take muscle mass into account. Are u self paying? If not, and insurance is paying, then obviously they're in agreement. I'm guessing you've done the research on the surgery. Only you can decide, it's your body. Do you yo yo a lot? You will lose weight, so it's a positive move. I do hope you make the right decision for yourself, and your journey. Keep me posted. Good Luck.

Thanks for the replies! I'm 37. My insurance is covering the procedure, so I guess they think I need it. It's scheduled for 4/14. I think I'm making the right choice. I'm just very very nervous.

Erik as it gets closer, my date is 4/18, I'm getting anxious/nervous too. I've been over 450 lbs for 5 years now, (I'm 400 now after the pre op diet) so I'm ready to turn back the clock. I was where u were at until the age of 25, but then beer and late night eating took over. You seem to be someone who works out, but occasionally likes to binge. Yes you wouldn't want to be like me. Actually 100 of my pounds was from LYMPHEDEMA, which is an affliction that affects many morbidly obese people. Nonetheless, my problems were from poor choices, but this surgery will increase my life span, as it will yours. I'm excited for my new life, (I already feel great from the 80 lb weight loss), and you will be running ultra marathons. My running days are over, but I look forward to visiting Florida again, where we used to have vacation all the time. Again, good luck, and keep me updated. And try and stay calm, you're going to be just fine. Mel from Green Bay.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
