Looking for April peeps for RNY (Bypass)

Recommended Posts

April 18!

Originally scheduled for May 4, someone cancelled and I got lucky. It's only been a month or so since my seminar and things moved really quick for me! I'm in Southern Ca

Congrats! Things moved much faster than I expected too. They were able to count the weigh-in at my December physical as my first of 4 weight checks. They had estimated a June surgery, but staying on top of things and working through the checklist quickly got me a surgery date 3 months after the intro class. I think I would have over-thought everything if I'd had too much longer. Or gained an extra 20lbs via food funerals haha.

Noticed your name... two pugs? We have two Boston Terriers. Looks like crazyboxermom might be a fan of flat-faced dogs too?

Yeah I think they are different post op. My surgery was Thursday. Everything went well and I came home yesterday. I am very sore but doing well. I lost 13.5 lbs on liver shrink but was only on it for a week. I haven't had any desire to eat at all which has been good but today I did get all my Protein in - 3 Unjury shakes. I just have to take it all really slow. Good luck on your surgery, keep me posted!! It's not easy but it will all be worth it!!

So glad you checked back in! How was your hospital experience?? Really eager to keep up with your progress. My surgery is a week from tomorrow, with one more week left to go on the liver shrink. I'm down 8lbs so far, and I'm happy to never see those lbs again!

Hospital experience was ok. Had a couple nurses that had attitudes but they were the exception. Mostly everyone was really sweet. The surgery nurse and the anesthesiologist were amazing. It was tough getting up and around because of the pain but it gets a little better everyday. The first night they got me up to sit in a chair in the room and the next day I was walking the halls. Surgeon came in a couple times to touch base and to answer any questions. One of the dietitians came by also with instructions on what to do after you go home. Main focus right now is moving around and getting 60 grams of Protein. They will send you home with pain meds, nausea meds and an antacid prescription to ward off ulcers. They will bring you broth and Jello but I had zero appetite and still don't. What a change but it has been nice. You will do wonderfully. The liver shrink is worth it. Even all the liquids the day before surgery wasn't as hard as I thought. I drank a lot of apple juice that day.

This made me feel so much better!! Thank you so much for the info. I'm excited to keep up with you and see how everything goes. One week from today, I should hopefully be waking up from anesthesia. I have to arrive at 6am and am 2nd on the roster for the morning. Did they say how long surgery takes? This isn't my first surgery rodeo but it is my first WLS and first at this hospital. Really happy to hear your experience was ok!

Surgery took about an hour but you also have to add in time for them to get you back there and get you to sleep. I think it took a couple hours total. I was the only one on Dr. weaver's schedule that day so yours could go faster. Mine was done at 12:30. You spend about an hour in recovery after surgery

About a million times so far. Especially after losing 8lbs this first week on my liver shrink diet. Sitting here thinking "Now... I can do this on my own, and at this pace, I could hit my goal weight without surgery." Then I remember every single failed attempt from the past, and my hormonal issues that have contributed to the weight gain, and all of the other factors. Then I un-second-guess myself. I'm nervous, but mostly that surgery goes okay and I come home safely to my family. Everything after that is something I know I'll acclimate to in time. This is all for a healthier me for my family, so that's what I always come back around to.

Thank you!! Feel the same way. I have lost and gained 100 pounds three times. I've lost 35 pounds on the liver shrinking diet and also said to myself, wow, why don't I just stay on this? But then quickly realized that I have been able to demonstrate successful weight loss it is the sustaining in maintaining that I completely suck at. At 57, I feel I have to do something that is permanent.

Hey all you April peeps how would you like to become Facebook friends where we could message each other and get to know each other better. I don't discuss this directly on fb tho. But messenger is a nice fast way to chat. Anyone interested?

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
